3 Detailed Program: SSN meeting 2016, Lausanne, January 23, :30-9:20: Registration and Poster Set-up 9:20-9:30: Welcome, SSN President, Representative from UNIL. 9:30-10:15: Plenary Lecture: Chair Micah Murray Bob Desimone, Brain and Cognitive Sciences, MIT A causal analysis of the attentional network 10:15-10:45: Coffee Break 10:45-12:00. Parallel Symposia I. ACTIVE SENSING. Chair: Carl Petersen Sensory perception is an active process in at least two ways: (1) the activity of neurons actively generates subjective sensory percepts, and (2) motor commands direct sensors towards selected targets. Thus internal motor commands control important aspects about what sensory information the brain will receive. In order to understand sensory perception, we therefore need to look closely at sensorimotor interactions and integration. The speakers will give an up-to-date account of the current understanding about the synaptic and circuit mechanisms by which the mouse actively sees and feels its environment. Takashi Sato, Tubingen: Dynamic representation of eye movements in mouse frontal cortex Sylvain Crochet, EPFL: Active sensing in the mouse whisker system Sonja Hofer, Biozentrum: Visual processing in mice exploring virtual environments II. COUPLING BETWEEN MIND AND BODY. Chair: Anita Luthi Mechanisms of interaction between brain and autonomous system in health and disease. Neuroscientists focus on the brain as the central organ for sensory perception, cognition and emotions, yet are less aware about the enormous influence of body physiology (metabolic, cardiovascular, inflammatory states) on brain function. The idea of the Symposium is to increase awareness of mindbody coupling in the Swiss Neuroscience Community by highlighting that (1) autonomous body states influence mental functions, (2) dysfunctional body physiology adversely affects brain functions and predisposes to psychiatric symptoms. Hugo Critchley, University of Sussex, UK : Interaction between cognition, emotion and the autonomic nervous system. Bernard Thorens, CIG, University of Lausanne : Brain glucose sensing and the control of pancreatic hormone secretion and motivated feeding behavior Philippe Van de Borne, Free University of Brussels, Belgium : Brain-heart interactions in normal and pathological sleep. 12:00-14:00: Poster Session and Lunch 13:30-14:15: SSN business meeting & Honorary member award youngssn CAREER session 14:14-15:00: Second Plenary Lecture. Chair: Anita Lüthi Magdalini Polymenidou, Prof. boursière FNS, University of Zurich Molecular pathogenesis of neurodegeneration 15:00-15:15: Coffee Break
4 15:15-16:30: Parallel Symposia III. BRAIN NETWORKS DYNAMICS IN COGNITIVE PROCESSING. Chair: youngssn Connectivity between brain areas is a core mechanism of cognition. How these brain networks dynamically fluctuate over time is of increasing importance to better understand cognitive processing in healthy and clinical populations. Through intracranial recordings in animals as well as resting-state and task-based fmri in humans, this symposium presents the latest results on brain networks dynamics involved in particular in spatial memory consolidation and emotional processing. - Karim Benchenane, CNRS: Explicit memory creation during sleep: a causal role of place cells in navigation - Dimitri Van de Ville, EPFL-UNIGE: The web of intrinsic functional networks: New insights in dynamics of resting-state fmri - Patrik Vuilleumier, UNIGE: Temporal fluctuations in large-scale brain networks associated with emotion processing IV. NEUROPATHOLOGICAL TARGETS IN ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE. Chair: Nicole Déglon/Lorenz Hirt. While the neuropathological features of Alzheimer's disease are well recognized, underlying disease mechanisms and new pathways are emerging. This symposium will cover some of the recent studies that might open new opportunities to fight this neurological disease. Stephan Klöppel, Freiburg (D): MRI-based pattern recognition methods for diagnostics and response prediction in neurodegenerative disorders Johannes Gräff, EPFL: Epigenetic alterations in Alzheimer s disease Tristan Bolmont, EPFL: Towards elucidating the role of gut microbiota and Alzheimer's disease 16:30-17:00: SSN Best publication award Volker Henn and Synapsis Foundation Poster Prizes 17:30 Farewell Apéro
