1 5 Keys to Discipline your ADHD child HOW TO START GETTING YOUR ADHD CHILD TO COOPERATE! By Lydia Herrera Speaker, Author and ADHD Parenting Coach

2 This is one of the most daunting parts for parents of ADHD kids. It can feel hard to get cooperation when lack of focus, trouble remembering and spontaneous behavior are a big part of the picture, right? I know. I've been there with my own child. Over the last 2 decades, I've also helped ADHD kids as a Principal, Vice-Principal, teacher and now as an ADHD parenting expert, author and coach. Here are 5 ways to make disciplining your ADHD child much, much EASIER. Key 1: Just START. Start early! No brainer, right? Yet I connect with a lot of parents who give up because they think it's too late. It's NEVER too late! If you're starting early or if your child is older, even a teenager, here are some guidelines: Be selective on the rules you are willing to 'fight' for. See something that concerns you? 3 Key 2: ADHD Parenting Self-Esteem. Do not depend solely on medication, diet or other therapies to influence your child's behaviors. YOU are one of the biggest factors that will influence your child's success. You must become more competent and CONFIDENT as the parent of an ADHD child. The problem is that ADHD kids (and their parents) are exposed to messages that something is WRONG with them because they don't conform to our society's norm. It can be all too easy to believe that you or your child are "broken" or somehow "not enough". Your ADHD Parenting Self-Esteem plummets. When you are not feeling confident and strong as a parent, your child suffers. Problematic behaviors increase. It's vital to increase both your and your ADHD child's confidence and self-esteem. 4 Key 3: ADHD Success Rituals. I cannot stress the importance of CONSISTENCY. We all know this is true. However, actually applying knowledge can feel very difficult, especially when you get upset, angry or frustrated with ADHD behaviors. You want to make applying knowledge a practice and creating ADHD Success Rituals is a great way to ensure this happens. As I mentioned in Key 2, increasing your and your child's ADHD self-esteem is vital. One of the ways to do this is by consistently honoring commitments to self and creating rituals to honor the self. Even and especially the small commitments! I want to encourage you to create your ADHD Success Rituals to help you. For example, these can include: boundary setting and keeping, routines that are followed and celebrated when kept, honoring the different way of "being" of your child rather than demeaning them with labels. (seeing them as extraordinary rather than broken.)

5 Although I have "Discipline" in the title of this resource, I want to make an important distinction because words matter. I call these your ADHD Success Rituals rather than your Rules of Discipline because: Discipline - core definition includes punishment. Success - the accomplishment of an aim or purpose. Rituals - a series of actions performed according to a prescribed order. Your ADHD Success Rituals are your prescribed set of rules and boundaries that empower your ADHD child to thrive! Key 4: ADHD Success blueprint. Acknowledge good behavior. Use positive statements: I like how you re... I feel happy when you... for older kids: Hey, thanks for doing what I asked. I really needed your help today. Thanks.

6 Make your positive statements sincere and immediate. Add a quick hug or some other physical touch. Set up your ADHD Success Blueprint - a chart to acknowledge success when your child cooperates. Keep it simple; give a reward at some point, but don t overdo it. Key 5: Master the Art of Positive Distraction. It's YOUR TURN as the parent of an ADHD child to use distraction to your advantage to avoid problems. You can divert your child s behavior from a near crisis to a better option when you pay attention to what your child is doing or saying. Here are some prompts to help you: "What about this option?" "Let's do this instead." "Are you sure you want to do that? This might be a better option" "Hey, this looks interesting over here!" Yes, it means you have to have eyes and ears on your child, but it s better to observe closely than to be in constant discipline mode.
