Distinguish how the ADHD brain functions differently 2. Recognize the impacts of self-modulation difficulties associated with ADHD across the lifespan 3. Identify the problems that can modulate or mimic ADHD presentation when targeting therapeutic interventions Three keywords ADHD, diagnosis, comorbidities Abstract Patients often complain of attentional problems or difficulties with mood regulation. Not all suffer from ADHD. What could be hiding under the water? Explore the factors that should be taken into account when assessing such complaints. Uncover what could modulate or mimic ADHD presentation. Swim in the murky waters of the differential diagnosis of ADHD and comorbidities like Anxiety and Mood Disorders, ODD, Borderline Personality Disorder, and emerge with a treatment plan that will integrate not only those disorders but also lifestyle issues. Review the functional outcome results of the MTA study 8 years after the study was started in 200 and question has the trajectory changed in 208? 2. Review the challenges to diagnosis and barriers to treatment in community care in 208 across Canada 3. Examine some of the innovative planning for community care geographically. Three keywords. MTA 2. multimodal 3. community care Abstract The MTA study initiated in 200 was a pivotal study in understanding the effectiveness of multimodal treatment for ADHD in combination with pharmacotherapy and comparing intensive management with community care. The conclusion reached in 2009 was as follows: Type of intensity of 4 months of treatment for ADHD in childhood (7-9.9 years) does not predict functioning 6 to 8 years later. Rather, early ADHD symptom trajectory regardless of treatment type is prognostic... children with combined type ADHD exhibit significant impairment in adolescence. Innovative treatment approaches targeting specific adolescent impairments are needed. This session will create a discussion in a small and large group session to review what innovative treatment approaches are existing today and what needs to happen in the future and where the leadership is going to occur.
3 3th Annual CADDRA ADHD Conference CADDRA Cruise 208 Submission Submission ID Presentation title When What We Know Doesn t Change What We Do: ADHD, Bad Habits & Addictions Three learning objectives. Apply knowledge about the neurobiology of ADHD and addiction, when dealing with high risk activities in young adults and adults with ADHD. 2. Integrate information about executive function impairments in treatment plans for individuals with ADHD and addictions. 3. Outline key talking points to use with patients who have developed dependency on marijuana for the management of ADHD symptoms. 4. Discuss general approaches to managing addictive activities such as video game use, pornography, gambling, marijuana, alcohol, other substance use with patients with ADHD. 5. Integrate stages of change approach to help patients with ADHD toward health. Three keywords addiction executive function young adult Abstract This seminar will deal with addiction issues commonly present in young adult and adult patients with ADHD in the family practice and in specialty clinics. Although addiction-specific resources are available for these patients, they are often pre-contemplative for change and unwilling to take that first step into a specialized service. The biology of addictive and habitual challenges will be reviewed with a focus on how executive function impairment affects these behaviours. Using a biopsychosocial approach, participants will examine ways to encourage patients to move beyond pre-contemplation towards healthy living. Using case-based discussions, the workshop will provide a framework to do this within the family practice or specialty clinic setting.

Explain what mindfulness is and what it is not 2. Highlight evidence which supports how mindfulness may be helpful for both patients and practitioners 2. Experience some of the core practices of the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR-Zinn) program which can be immediately used in practice 3. Identify resources that are available to support both the patient and practitioner in incorporating mindfulness into their everyday practice and personal lives. Three keywords mindfulness stress reduction evidence-based compassion Abstract Mindfulness is awareness, cultivated by paying attention in a sustained and particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally - Jon Kabat-Zinn (202). Mindfulness approaches (MBSR; MBCT) have been scientifically proven to be helpful for patients presenting with mental health concerns (e.g., depression, anxiety, ADHD). Training in mindfulness meditation can also alleviate the psychological distress and burnout experienced by many physicians/health care providers and can improve their well-being. This workshop will provide a brief overview of the evidence supporting mindfulness as an important tool and how it can be used for the benefit of the patient as well as the physician/health care provider. The workshop will also include interactive mindfulness practices that can be used by the physician/health care provider with their patients as well as personally.

Recognize the meaning and application of resiliency 2. Identify the areas of known and possible practical resiliency interventions in ADHD 3. Define three potential future projects in this area. Three keywords resiliency ADHD research Abstract Resiliency. The medical model focuses on disease states, their etiology and their treatment. Some might say it is an unworkable model as it does not focus on strength, prevention and accommodation. They would be partially right. No one would argue that prevention is important. The vast majority of morbidity and mortality was not based on secondary and tertiary medicine but by common sense improvements in prevention. For a condition like ADHD, a highly genetic neurodevelopmental disorder that, in the right circumstances, could theoretically be an asset to an individual, where is the research? In some ways, much of resiliency management has been intuitive; good sleep, exercise, nutrition, stress reduction, positive attitude and better organizational skills. This talk speaks to why we need to rethink our ideas of resiliency and to create made-in-canada research to understand these models. In this presentation, participants will be invited to brainstorm and discuss areas of research that are ripe for intervention in this area.
