1 Position Profile Chief Executive Officer Feeding America San Diego San Diego, CA Feeding America San Diego is seeking an experienced and inspirational Chief Executive Officer to lead this impactful and growing nonprofit that feeds 59,000 hungry children, seniors and families each week. The Organization Founded in 2007, Feeding America San Diego (FASD) is the largest hunger relief organization in San Diego County. Funded by philanthropic and community support, FASD s mission to end hunger through healthy food, education and advocacy guides its life changing efforts every day in pursuit of its vision a hunger free and healthy San Diego. FASD shepherds a holistic and comprehensive approach to hunger relief and nutrition by working hand in hand with a network of 150 agencies, local school districts, corporate partners and community collaborations, and more than 10,000 volunteers to serve 59,000 children, families and seniors in need each week. Through its membership with Feeding America, the nation s largest domestic hunger relief organization, FASD adheres to high levels of compliance and quality assurance and accesses best practices in hunger relief programs, nationally recognized partnerships, comprehensive staff training, program supports, and financial and food resources. In the current year approximately 19 million meals will be distributed across San Diego County. Combined with products sourced locally, every dollar donated to the organization is turned into six meals for those in need. Incorporated in the state of California, Feeding America San Diego addresses hunger through four major efforts: Feeding Kids The Feeding Kids initiative pairs critical food assistance with focused education on the role of fresh fruits and vegetables in a healthy, active lifestyle. FASD identifies and partners with 32 schools (8 school districts) in San Diego County that have free and reduced price meal rates of 65% or higher, striving to serve entire school populations rather than a select number of students. School Pantry and BackPack programs help alleviate child hunger in San Diego County by providing nutritious, healthy food on a regular basis to low income students and their families. FASD also expands its impact to children via accessing food through the federal Summer Food Service Program and Child and Adult Care Food Programs. Feeding Families As the only program of its kind in San Diego County, the Mobile Pantry delivers food to 13 neighborhoods that have a high incidence of poverty and lack access to transportation, but experience relatively low levels of emergency food assistance. FASD also works with Sempra Energy and utilizes the CalFresh Outreach program to connect families in urban and rural neighborhoods with public benefits and resources that help them make ends meet. Twenty seven 1

2 percent of the families we serve have an active duty military or veteran service member in the family. Feeding Seniors Almost 10% of individuals served by FASD are seniors. Several FASD partnerships to feed seniors exist, including relationships with senior independent living facilities and work with Meals on Wheels. Feeding Excellence People not only need more food to eat, but they need healthier food. With nearly half the San Diego community 1.6 million people considered overweight or obese, this issue is compounded by struggling families purchasing inexpensive foods that are processed and unhealthy. FASD is dedicated to the integration of hunger relief and wellness. FASD believes the opposite of hungry is healthy, not full. Through its CalFresh Outreach program, countywide nutrition education classes, innovative partnerships (including a research relationship with the University of California San Diego s Free Health Clinic), and advocacy efforts, FASD remains committed to moving the needle on the relationship between hunger relief and health. The organization s current operating budget is $6.3 million, and the organization estimates that more than $30 million of food will come through its doors this year. FASD s dynamic, enthusiastic and innovative team includes 44 employees and is led by Karen Haren, Interim Executive Director. There are also Directors of Finance, Development & Marketing, Programs, and Operations. The Position FASD s Chief Executive Officer will provide leadership both inside and outside the organization, continually increasing FASD s role as an innovative progressive leader of hunger relief in San Diego County. In doing so, the Chief Executive Officer will fulfill the five strategic imperatives laid out in the organization s Strategic Plan: a) Healthy Meals to Meet the Need: We seek to reduce the meal gap in San Diego County for those who are food insecure through comprehensive and healthy food distribution. Goals include providing more than 110 million meals through a combination of pounds of food distributed and CalFresh Outreach over the next five years, and acquiring more than million pounds of food with a focus on increasing local produce and retail store donations. b) Solve Hunger: We seek to lead the community in finding a systemic solution to hunger with a focus on nutrition education and healthcare partnerships, capacity building for our partner agencies, as well as advocacy efforts to influence public policy. Goals include distributing nutrition information, increasing advocacy efforts, and improving distribution strategies to increase the equity, dignity and quality of FASD s distribution network. 2

3 c) Financial Health: We seek to increase private support, a resource necessary for reducing the meal gap in San Diego County, and remain a financially healthy organization. Goals include raising $38 million in donations over the five year period as well as growing operational reserves. d) Community Mobilization: We seek to engage the community in the fight against hunger, grow a positive perception of our mission and the people we serve, and mobilize the public to get involved to end hunger. Goals include continuing to provide a superior volunteer experience and establishing and increasing engagement of the community on the issue of hunger. e) Organizational Excellence: We seek to maximize organizational excellence by leveraging human capital, increasing food safety and building a distribution network that is highly innovative and efficient. Goals align with Feeding America national compliance requirements and also include reducing produce waste and monitoring Board giving and attendance. Key Responsibilities Primary responsibilities of the Chief Executive Officer include: Leading the development and execution of the FASD strategic plan, which ensures the continued efficiency and effectiveness of FASD s business operations and programs Collaborating alongside and building relationships with FASD s network of member agencies and community partners in their collective efforts to end hunger Serving as FASD s chief public spokesperson in articulating the issue of hunger in San Diego County and in furthering FASD s mission Ensuring that the organization achieves its resource development goals necessary to achieve long term financial stability while also meeting current operating needs Supporting FASD s Board of Directors in order to enhance the organization s ability to carry out its mission Leadership Outlook and Near Term Priorities The organization s near term priorities for the next months include: Leading and managing the organization through the beginning of a five year strategic plan that builds FASD through steady and realistic growth. Year One of this plan includes distributing almost 19 million meals (22.6 million pounds), among many other goals, and managing an operating budget of $6.3 million. Strengthening policies, processes and systems around human resources and finance, so that the organization can continue to grow successfully, and continuing to attract, develop and retain competent staff that will best position FASD to achieve its mission. 3

4 Expanding the Board of Directors and proactively and regularly engaging with the Board to support them in executing their governance, fiscal oversight, fundraising and leadership roles. Expanding and deepening the level of philanthropic support for FASD across San Diego through growing and diversifying the organization s base of individual and corporate donors. Increasing the number of healthy nutritious meals provided to children, seniors and families including military families and finding creative solutions to end hunger. Furthering a working environment that builds on FASD s strengths and culture around innovative programming, food safety, nutrition education including looking holistically at building food security for clients and the community. Experience and Attributes The ideal candidate for this position will be a highly motivated experienced executive who shares the Board and staff s commitment to FASD s mission and who excels at building relationships inside and outside the organization. The individual will bring a variety of experiences and attributes to this role, including: Leadership: engenders trust, motivates people to collective action; viewed by the Board, staff, and community as a high energy, change oriented Community Leader, projects confidence in the attainability of FASD s vision Management skills: deals effectively with demanding situations; manages continuity as effectively as change and transition; supports systems development as the foundation for effective organizational growth; holds a commitment to professional development; values creativity Fund development: documented success in leading fund raising activities in the not for profit sector, including from individual donors Business acumen: demonstrated ability to integrate and coordinate all areas of management finance, human resources, operations and distribution for organizational success; fiscal planning and budget management experience Compassion and altruism demonstrated through involvement in community advocacy; a keen interest in and passion for FASD s mission Well developed interpersonal and relationship building skills; interacts well with people from all segments of the community; politically savvy, diplomatic Senior management experience of at least five years and ideally more, with proven results preferably in the non profit sector and prior experience working at a high level with non profit Boards of Directors 4

5 Results oriented: mission focused and goal driven; ability to translate broad goals into achievable steps; self starter; innovative, creative problem solver Effective communicator: excellent verbal and written communications skills; persuasive presentation style, ability to have tough conversations in a respectful way, has an intuitive sense of people and situations, can identify problems and their root causes and work to resolve them, and be open in the process.
