3 Tuberculosis in Canada 2002 Pre-Release

4 Introduction To facilitate an earlier release of key national tuberculosis (TB) data, the following tables have been extracted from the Canadian Tuberculosis Reporting System (CTBRS) for the year Data included in this pre-release report should be considered provisional until publication of the full report Tuberculosis in Canada Highlights In 2002, 1,555 cases (5.0 per 100,000) of new active and relapsed TB were reported to the CTBRS. The highest rate of 31.4 per 100,000 was reported in the North region (Yukon Territory, Northwest Territories and Nunavut). TB incidence was lowest in the Atlantic region (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador: 1.1 per 100,000). The three most populous provinces (Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia), which collectively make up 75% of Canada s population, accounted for 75% of the total number of reported cases (Table 1). By age group, individuals between the ages of 25 and 34 years made up the largest number of reported cases, accounting for 18% of the total (Table 2). Accurate information on country of origin of TB cases in Canada has been available since In 2002, TB among foreign-born individuals accounted for 66% of all reported cases in Canada. Canadian-born non- Aboriginal and Canadian-born Aboriginal cases made up 16% and 15% respectively of the reported cases. Birthplace was unknown for 3% of cases (Table 3). Respiratory TB was the most frequently reported main diagnostic site, representing 66% of reported cases in 2002 (Table 4). TB of the peripheral lymph nodes accounted for 14% of the cases and was the second most commonly reported diagnostic site. Diagnostic site varied by birthplace. The majority of peripheral lymph node cases were in foreign-born individuals from the Western Pacific Region (Table 5). Pre-Release - Tuberculosis in Canada
