2 research service. The team aims to optimise positive outcomes for people living with lymphoedema through excellence in assessment and management of the condition along the continuum. Our lymphoedema program offers management of all types and stages of lymphoedema, supported by research and education initiatives, to provide the best service to our patients. We are home to both conservative and surgical lymphoedema clinics. It is our goal to provide our patients with a comprehensive service that best suits their individual situation. Professor John Boyages Professor John Boyages is a cancer specialist with over 30 years experience in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. He is the Professor of Breast Oncology at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Macquarie University and Discipline Head, Radiation Oncology. John is also director of the Australian Lymphoedema Education Research and Treatment (ALERT) centre at Macquarie University. Until 2011 John was the founding director of the Westmead Breast Cancer Institute and he was then appointed to Macquarie University as the inaugural head of its new Cancer Institute from 2011 to John has published over 140 research and clinical articles. Education, Research and Treatment Students succeed from attending our level one course as they benefit from high quality education delivered by a passionate team, access to up to date information founded on a strong basis on the team being focussed on lymphoedema research, and the ability to access real patient data through the service offering a lymphoedema program. The key three course lectures are Sally Kava (OT), Louise Koelmeyer (OT) and Andrea Mangion (Physiotherapist.)
3 All three lecturers are Lymphoedema therapists, ALA and NLPR members and have been involved in running training courses for over 5 years. As Lymphoedema Program Manager in ALERT, Louise is involved in research studies on achieving better outcomes in early and advanced lymphoedema. Louise is one of the Australian Principal Investigators on the 5- year Vanderbilt University Clinical Trial looking at monitoring and early detection of breast cancer-related lymphoedema. Macquarie University is contributing the highest number of study participants (400) to the total cohort of 1,100 women on this study. Louise is enrolled at Macquarie University in PhD studies exploring Home Monitoring for lymphoedema.
4 Ms Sally Kava Ms Sally Kava is an occupational therapist with over 27 years of clinical experience in both public and private settings specialising in lymphoedema in all areas of assessment, education, and treatment. Further education in lymphoedema has allowed for travel to Germany to
5 undertake advanced lymphoedema training at the Foeldi clinic, Sweden to learn more about liposuction for lymphoedema and Finland to learn more about innovative treatments for lymphoedema, namely PhysioTouch. Ms Mangion is completing her Masters at Sydney University on PhysioTouch and works at Macquarie University and the ALERT Education program as a lecturer and to coordinate the ALERT Education programs. Ms Mangion has completed Cert 4 in Training and Education and is passionate about the delivery of adult education. Guest lecturers Guest lecturers are provided by Dr Helen Mackie and Associate Professor Hiroo Suami. Associate Prof Hiroo Suami Dr Hiroo Suami is Associate Professor in lymphology in ALERT in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. Before coming to Macquarie University in October 2015, he worked in the Department of Plastic Surgery at the MD Anderson Cancer Centre in Houston, Texas for 7 years as Assistant Professor and director of the microsurgery research centre. During that time, Dr Suami assisted with indocyanine green fluorescence lymphography in over 200 surgical lymphoedema cases and he is now using the same technique with patients at Macquarie University. Hiroo is a reconstructive plastic surgeon and world authority on the morphological research of the lymphatic system. Through his research, he has developed a new method to visualise the lymphatic system in animals and humans. This is a world-first procedure which enables the lymphatic system to be mapped into defined territories called lymphosomes.
