Open Access Journals Publishers automatically and immediately make the work available and allow anyone with an Internet connection to read it for free. Open Access Repositories Author(s) of a work self-archive the work in an open access repository. Repositories are often specific to an institution, a discipline, or a funder.

So before you publish
Scholars can publish and keep their rights.
Many journals let authors keep some rights.
Can I share my work with others?
It all comes down to the contract.
If preparing to sign a contract, READ IT. Does it ask for a copyright transfer? Non-exclusive or exclusive license? (remember: copyright is five rights) Are there terms like work for hire? (yikes!) If it s for a book or book chapter, does it include a rights reversion clause?
See something you don t like? Contact the publisher. Just ask Submit an addendum Modify the language of the contract itself Agree to quid pro quo (i.e. an embargo period) Adapted from the Authors Alliance guide Understanding Open Access: When, Why, & How to Make Your Work Openly Accessible, made available under a Creative Commons Attribution license. 39 Submit an Addendum ADDENDUM TO PUBLICATION AGREEMENT 1. THIS ADDENDUM hereby modifies and supplements the attached Publication Agreement concerning the following Article: (manuscript title) (journal name) 2. The parties to the Publication Agreement as modified and supplemented by this Addendum are: (corresponding author) (Individually or, if one than more author, collectively, Author) (Publisher) 3. This Addendum and the Publication Agreement, taken together, allocate all rights under copyright with respect to all versions of the Article. The parties agree that wherever there is any conflict between this Addendum and the Publication Agreement, the provisions of this Addendum are paramount and the Publication Agreement shall be construed accordingly. 4. Author s Retention of Rights. Notwithstanding any terms in the Publication Agreement to the contrary, AUTHOR and PUBLISHER agree that in addition to any rights under copyright retained by Author in the Publication Agreement, Author retains: (i) the rights to reproduce, to distribute, to publicly perform, and to publicly display the Article in any medium for noncommercial purposes; (ii) the right to prepare derivative works from the Article; and (iii) the right to authorize others to make any non-commercial use of the Article so long as Author receives credit as author and the journal in which the Article has been published is cited as the source of first publication of the Article. For example, Author may make and distribute copies in the course of teaching and research and may post the Article on personal or institutional Web sites and in other open-access digital repositories. 5. Publisher's Additional Commitments. Publisher agrees to provide to Author within 14 days of first publication and at no charge an electronic copy of the published Article in a format, such as the Portable Document Format (.pdf), that preserves final page layout, formatting, and content. No technical restriction, such as security settings, will be imposed to prevent copying or printing of the document. 6. Acknowledgment of Prior License Grants. In addition, where applicable and without limiting the retention of rights above, Publisher acknowledges that Author s assignment of copyright or Author s grant of exclusive rights in the Publication Agreement is subject to Author s prior grant of a non-exclusive copyright license to Author s employing institution and/or to a funding entity that financially supported the research reflected in the Article as part of an agreement between Author or Author s employing institution and such funding entity, such as an agency of the United States government. 7. For record keeping purposes, Author requests that Publisher sign a copy of this Addendum and return it to Author. However, if Publisher publishes the Article in the journal or in any other form without signing a copy of this Addendum, such scholars.sciencecommons.org

Abstract We compared self-described HIV-positive (31.6 %, n = 445), HIV-negative (56.8 %, n = 801), and HIV-unknown (11.6 %, n = 164) gay and bisexual men on sociodemographic and behavioral characteristics. Participants from across the U.S. were enrolled via a popular sexual networking website to complete an online survey. In total, 44.8 % of HIV-negative and HIV-unknown men said they had not been tested for HIV in the CDC-recommended last 6 months. HIV-unknown men significantly differed from HIV-negative and HIV-positive men in sexual behavior and HIV status disclosure patterns. HIV-unknown men were more willing than HIV-negative men to take PrEP; however, HIV-unknown men were significantly less likely than others to have health insurance or a primary care provider. Given the observed differences, researchers should consider analyzing men who are HIV-unknown distinctly from HIV-negative and HIV-positive men. Keywords HIV testing Men who have sex with men Gay and bisexual men Condomless anal sex HIV status disclosure Introduction HIV continues to be a public health crisis among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) [1, 2]. Although HIV incidence has plateaued or declined in many groups such as injection drug users and heterosexuals [3], incidence among GBMSM is once again on the rise and increased by 12 % between 2009 and 2013 [4]. This disparity is even more pronounced among men of color, especially young men of color [4, 5]. 123 Accepted Manuscript Publisher s PDF

CUNY University Faculty Senate Statement and Resolution on Open Access WHEREAS there is a need for open-access models to assist libraries and institutions in dealing with the budgetary challenges presented by the ever-increasing costs charged by journal publishers; and WHEREAS open-access institutional repositories do not replace traditional publishing but rather serve as an additional venue for maximizing access to the fruits of faculty research; and WHEREAS numerous universities have created open-access institutional repositories and associated policies, and many more universities are currently working toward such repositories and policies; and WHEREAS the City University of New York is committed to educating the public and making knowledge accessible and affordable; therefore let it be RESOLVED that the University Faculty Senate supports the development of an open-access institutional repository for the City University of New York, and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that in accordance with best practices, guidelines for depositing materials into the CUNY repository should be created by faculty appointed by the UFS working with the Office of Library Services and should include recommendations to faculty to deposit finished journal articles, preprints, chapters, etc. The guidelines should encourage but not require faculty to contribute to the repository, and ensure that depositing a work into the repository will not affect the author s copyright.
