Merlin, MD This session will begin by briefly reviewing the current state of the science regarding long-term opioid prescribing. We will use a risk/benefit framework to discuss decisions about initiation and continuation of opioids. Then, we will review behaviors that may arise among individuals on longterm opioid therapy. These include using more opioid than prescribed, unhealthy use of alcohol or illicit drugs, missing appointments, and aggressive behavior, among others. Using a case-based approach, we will discuss the approach to evaluation and management of these behaviors.
