Session 1 Basic HIV Facts Patient Navigation Intervention
Session 1 HIV, the Viral Life Cycle & Understanding the Importance of HAART and Adherence aids basics/just diagnosed with hiv aids/treatment options/first steps to treatment/index.html innovations in the battle with human cells
HIV, the Viral Life Cycle & Understanding HAART and Adherence By the end of Session 1, the patient will be able to define: Exposure to HIV Stages of HIV infection Routes of HIV transmission HIV viral life cycle How medications works in body How HIV medications help the body s immune system get stronger (CD4 increase) How medications can reduce the amount of HIV in the body (reduce viral load) Importance of adherence
HIV Exposure HIV positive people can transmitted to other people during certain activities Some people have had multiple exposures without becoming infected Some people have been exposed one time and become infected
Estimated HIV Exposure Rates
HIV Life Cycle & Medications at Work Stages of HIV Infection Routes of Transmission Risk HIV Life Cycle the Big Picture Video
Stages of HIV Infection Acute primary infection The asymptomatic stage Sympto matic HIV infection AIDS hiv aids/symptoms stages aids basics/just diagnosed with hiv aids/hiv in your body/stages of hiv/
Routes of Transmission Risk HIV enters the body through open cuts, sores, or breaks in the skin; through mucous membranes, such as those inside the anus or vagina; or through direct injection. There are several ways by which this can happen: Transmission Requires: 1. Infected body fluid. 2. Entry into the body.
Body Fluids and HIV Transmission
Body Fluids and HIV Transmission Fluids that DO transmit HIV: Blood Semen Vaginal Fluid Breast Milk (in order of the highest concentration of HIV) Fluids that DO NOT transmit HIV: Saliva Tears Mucus Urine Sweat Feces
Routes of HIV Transmission Sexual Contact: Anal Vaginal Oral Digital Blood Exposure: Perinatal: Sex Toys Needle use Occupational exposure Transfusion of blood products Tears in skin or cuts Transmission from mom to baby Breastfeeding

Goals of HAART Prolong and improve quality of life Suppress viral load (goal undetectable or <20) Improve CD4 count Prevent progression to AIDS Minimize drug toxicity and manage side effects and drug interactions
Antiretroviral Classes Nucleoside/tide Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors (NRTIs) Non Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors (NNRTIs) Protease Inhibitors (PIs) Integrase Strand Transferase Inhibitors (INSTIs) Entry Inhibitors

Adherence Patient Navigation Intervention
Adherence Adherence means sticking to your: Scheduled appointment with your primary care doctor, HIV specialists, other medical specialists, and labs HIV regimen by taking HIV medicines every day and exactly as prescribed.
Adherence HIV medicines prevent HIV from multiplying, which protects the immune system and reduces the risk of both drug resistance and HIV treatment failure. Other benefits of adherence include: Better overall health Improved quality of life Decreased risk of HIV transmission
Adherence HIV medicines prevent HIV from multiplying, which protects the immune system and reduces the risk of both drug resistance and HIV treatment failure. Other benefits of adherence include: Better overall health Improved quality of life Decreased risk of HIV transmission
Adherence You can help yourself by: Develop a relationship with healthcare staff Understand basic HIV education HIV basics- life cycle, transmission, long-term risks Medications- how they work, side effects, benefits Develop a long-term adherence plan Long-term health goals Adherence plan Find a support network, if needed
