Once contracted you will have it in your body (active or dormant) for life. 40 different strands (2 cause cancer; 2 cause genital warts) What are the signs, symptoms and potential health problems of HPV? 1% will get genital warts (look like tiny cauliflower) can get warts in the throat from oral sex wart strands cannot cause cancer most people are asymptomatic (show no symptoms) How do people get HPV? vaginal sex oral sex genital to genital contact anal sex How does HPV cause genital warts and cancer? the virus causes cells in the cervix to change (called dysplasia) those cells can transform into pre-cancerous cells How common are HPV and HPV related diseases? It is estimated that more than 50% of the current population has it at any given time. 12,000 cases each year caused cervical cancer 1000 cases of vaginal cancer 1000 cases of penile cancer How can we protect ourselves against this virus? 1. Know your partners and use a condom for every sex act! 2. vaccine = Gardasil only protects against 2 cancerous strands and 2 wart strands women & men can get the vaccine! 3 shots each 3 months apart

3 CHLAMYDIA ("the silent disease") bacterial infection = curable 3 of 4 ppl with it are 25 or younger transmitted through vaginal, oral or anal sex symptoms vaginal/penile discharge, pain during urination, or no symptoms at all 40% of untreated cases causes PID in women/50% of NGU in men cured w/ antibiotics If left untreated it can cause infertility for both men and women!

4 Gonorrhea "the clap" bacterial = curable 2 to 5 days after infection 4 of 5 men will have symptoms! - pus discharge, pain during urination and ejaculation - vaginal discharge, pain, lower belly pain infection in throat from oral cured with antibiotics can cause infertility

5 PID - (Pelvic Inflammatory Disease) - bacterial infection - only in women - thick, foul smelling discharge from the vagina -lower abdominal pain - fever - pain urinating and during sex Treatment antibiotics

6 Trichomoniasis - "Trich" seen mostly in women men can get it caused by a parasite = curable symptoms 5 to 28 days after infected thick, frothy yellowish/greenish discharge; pain during sex and urination (very common and very curable) cured with antibiotics

7 NGU (nongonoccal urethritis) UTI in men / bacterial 50% caused by Chlamydia symptoms occur 1 4 weeks discharge, pain infertility if left untreated! bacterial = curable w/ antibiotics

Type 1 cold sores Type 2 genital warts (20%) first outbreak 12 days (50 80%) direct contact of semen, vaginal fluid, or sore can get it from an infected partner who does not have a visible sore! smalls bumps blisters 4 5 outbreaks a year and can be brought on by stress, fatigue, or even tight clothing No cure! Just treatment!
