4 Background of FC Program Commenced over a decade ago by FMoH/UNFPA Currently two large scale female condom programmes exist FMoH /UNFPA female condom programme Implemented nationally and mainly through public sector health facilities (pilot CBD distribution and YFC) Universal Access to female condoms (UAFC) Nigeria Country programme (private sector) Funded by Dutch government, Oxfam and UNFPA Implemented in 5 states (Delta, Edo, Lagos, Rivers, FCT); distribution through salons, PPMVs etc Collaboration between SFH, FMoH, UNFPA, and CSOs (Donation of 4 mil pieces Female Condoms

7 Advocacy September 16, 2013 marks the second annual Global Female Condom Day a day of education and advocacy to increase awareness, access, and use of female condoms. It was celebrated in Nigeria on 10 th October with support from UNFPA, SFH and BMGF Advocacy Program for Female Condoms funded by Rutgers Intl and implemented by ARFH and EVA and supported by SFH FC is one of the identified commodities prioritized by Nigeria and the UN Commission for Life saving Commodities Additional funding for capacity building and awareness efforts

8 Key achievements Inclusion of the female condoms in the National condom programme strategy Distribution of female condom demonstration models and development of IEC and promotional materials Capacity building to address knowledge and skills gaps on product Awareness and demand creation for FCs Inauguration of female condom advocates Female condom advocacy project (FCAP) facilitated by ARFH and EVA

9 Key Achievements by Social Marketing sector Capacity building Community Based Organizations trained 1,908 persons trained as IPC (Interpersonal conductors) 3,673,715 persons sensitized 7,899 PPMVs (Patent Medicine Vendors) provided orientation

10 Supply Chain Lessons Learnt A strengthened supply chain management is key for ensuring availability. Advocacy A strong grassroots intervention, interpersonal communication and elimination of inhibiting cultural and social beliefs are key to promoting the use of female condom in Nigeria. Men are drivers and their support in promoting FC acceptance is crucial. Communication Positive first experience influences sustained use Investment in a strong mass media for promotion of female condom is crucial to complement community interventions

11 Lessons Learnt Cont d Service Provision The pleasure component of female condoms attributed to the ring can be a window of opportunity. Need to promote dual protection advantage (prevention of HIV and STIs) Female condom promotion should not be limited to MARPs but target all women especially professional women s group.

12 Policy Implication and Recommendations Need to strengthen national support and advocacy for female condoms Potential for dual protection Female controlled thereby addressing women SRHR Increased partners funding support for female condom programming Explore opportunities to promote female condom in every project
