3 Based on International standards and stakeholder dialogue Benchmarking good practice The AIDS Accountability Workplace Scorecard is based on the ILO Recommendation concerning HIV and AIDS and the World of Work and the ILO Code of Practice on HIV/AIDS and the World of Work. Other resources that have been taken into consideration in the development of the Workplace Scorecard include the Global Reporting Initiative s (GRI) Reporting Guidance on HIV/AIDS and the South African National Auditable Standard for HIV & AIDS workplace programmes, the SANS 16001:2007. Expert consultation The scorecard has been developed based on extensive consultation with business and other key stakeholders. The Workplace Scorecard is built on a proposal developed by Gavin George from the Health, Economics and HIV/AIDS Research Division (HEARD), University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Did you know? The ILO estimates that the labour force in over 30 countries will be between 10 and 35% smaller by 2020 than it would have been without AIDS.

4 Business solution and accountability mechanism Business solution The AIDS Accountability Workplace Scorecard will benefit both individual workplaces and the business sector as a whole. It will identify gaps in the workplace response to allow for increased targeting and focus on these areas. Workplaces stand to benefit from the scorecard in several ways: Benchmarking of individual workplace s response vis-à-vis other workplaces, including comparisons of engagement by industry/sector Proof for top management and board that HIV and AIDS are being managed effectively Better management of risks and opportunities regarding HIV and AIDS internally Attracting and maintaining investors concerned about HIV risk Improved employee and community relations through a culture of openness and collaboration Accountability mechanism Employees, customers, investors, communities, regulatory bodies, and others can use the information provided in the Workplace Scorecard Reports to gain a better understanding of how individual companies and sectors manage HIV and AIDS. The AIDS Accountability Workplace Scorecard will assess how accountable workplaces are to their: Community at large Employees and their families Investors Did you know? Sub-Saharan Africa accounts for 24% of the global burden of disease, but only 3% of the world s health workforce.

5 Built on independently validated data Data collection and validation Data collection will be done in two steps, first, through self- reporting by the participating companies and, secondly, by independent validation. Validated data is critical for the credibility of the Workplace Scorecard. It is also a precondition for having genuine discussions on how workplace programmes can be improved. AAI s validation process will need to be transparent and allow for scrutiny by stakeholders. Top scoring workplaces will be honored with the AIDS Accountability Workplace Award. Awards will be given in different categories to recognise excellent HIV and AIDS workplace programmes and create a platform for good practice sharing.

6 Scorecard pilots. In order to test the feasibility of the Scorecard framework at an early stage, in 2009 AAI piloted a version of the scorecard together with the Swedish Workplace HIV/ AIDS Programme s members in seven countries in Eastern and Southern Africa. The pilot study led to some improvements of the scorecard. In 2010/11, we will pilot an updated scorecard version among a new group of companies situated in Sub Saharan Africa. The outcomes of this study will influence the final Workplace Scorecard that AAI will launch in Ericsson, Uganda Heineken- participating in the scorecard pilot 2010/11: Heineken decided several years ago that a comprehensive policy for HIV/AIDS, including all aspects of prevention, nondiscrimination and treatment, is both a sound business decision and a clear way forward for our company. We can only hope that our example inspires other leaders, be they in business or government, to actually deliver on the things that have been promised over and over again.
