2 Welcome remarks from Dr Silvia Vidal Co-director of the McGill Research Center on Complex Traits Professor, Dept. of Human Genetics, McGill University Dear Friends and Colleagues, Welcome to the 1 st International Symposium on Immunogenetics of Infectious and Inflammatory Diseases in Montreal! The Symposium marks the inauguration of the McGill University Research Center on Complex Traits (MRCCT). Our international Center networks 35 basic and clinical investigators from academia and private sector using a multidisciplinary approach to study human diseases with a complex genetic etiology. The MRCCT central theme is immune-mediated diseases, from severe infections to chronic inflammatory disorders such as multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and Inflammatory bowel disease. Our mission is to establish a Center of excellence in basic and translational research, education, and entrepreneurship to accelerate new scientific discoveries enabling personalized medicine approaches to cure immune-mediated disorders. For our first Symposium, we are delighted to feature an exceptional program showcasing the breadth of research, and its applications to human health, undertaken by MRCCT members. They will present their latest discoveries about the role of host genetic factors, the immune system and the microbiota on the development and outcome of immune-mediated diseases, using mouse and human models. Others will discuss how this new knowledge is informing new clinical approaches and successful treatments. A number of talks will tackle the new trends in computational medicine to unlock epigenetic regulators and characterize their role in cell homeostasis and their contribution to disease states. Finally, other presentations will focus on new technologies including intra-vital imaging to understand immune responses in live animals as well as gene editing methods to validate new drug targets. Canada has the highest rate of multiple sclerosis in the world. So to further stimulate discussion, our keynote speaker, Dr Marco Prinz, Director of the Institute of Neuropathology University Medical Center, University of Freiburg, and a specialist in the study of brain-specific immune functions, will be presenting new work on the function of the innate immune system in autoimmune and neurodegenerative CNS disorders. This Symposium places great importance on the involvement of students and post doctoral fellows. Fortyseven posters will be presented during the event, and we thank in advance our panel of judges who will have to make tough decisions to identify the winners of the poster competition! By presenting the various aspects of fundamental, clinical and translational research related to various infectious and inflammatory diseases, we hope that the Symposium will provide a platform that promotes interdisciplinary thinking, generates new ideas and fosters scientific advancement. The Symposium has attracted 215 participants from universities, hospitals and biotech companies that will have an opportunity to join the conversation, network and discuss with our experts. We sincerely thank all those involved in the organization of the symposium, in particular all of our speakers. We acknowledge the team of volunteers, lead by Ms Marianne Provost, for their diligence and enthusiasm in the preparation of this event. We are also very grateful to our sponsors and partners for their generous support that has permitted to organize a Symposium free of charge. We look forward to an exciting meeting that promises great scientific debates and enjoyable social interactions. Let s make together an unforgettable event in snowy Montreal! Silvia Vidal On behalf of the organizing committee

7 KEYNOTE SPEAKERS Dr Marco Prinz Director of the Institute of Neuropathology University of Freiburg, Germany Marco Prinz is Professor of Neuropathology and Chair of the Institute of Neuropathology at the University of Freiburg, Germany. Dr. Prinz obtained his MD at the Charité, Humboldt-University Berlin in During his MD thesis he investigated the pathology of cortical interneurons in humans at the Institute of Neuroanatomy at the Charitè Berlin. He did a postdoc at the Max-Delbrück-Centre (MDC) of Molecular Medicine dedicated to the function of glial cells in the central nervous system (CNS), especially microglia. He performed his residency in Neuropathology at the University Hospital Zurich, Switzerland and studied there the role of the peripheral and CNS-restricted immune system for the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases such as prion diseases. In 2003 he became a group leader at the University Hospital in Göttingen, Germany and in 2007 lecturer of Neuropathology there. He was recruited to the University of Freiburg, Germany, in 2008 and was promoted to the rank of Full Professor and Chair of the Institute of Neuropathology. Dr. Prinz laboratory studies the mechanisms that regulate the development and function of the mononuclear phagocyte lineage in the central nervous system including microglia, perivascular and meningeal macrophages. His laboratory has made seminal discoveries in CNS macrophage biology revealing their embryonic origin and their local maintenance in situ. Dr. Prinz belongs to several German Research Foundation (DFG)- and EU-funded scientific consortia to decipher the transcriptional regulation of the macrophage lineage in the CNS. Currently, his research group aims to understand myeloid cell biology in the CNS during health and disease and studies the impact of the immune system on the pathogenesis of neurological disorders such as neurodegenerative diseases, ultimately aimed at recognizing novel therapeutic strategies and targets to treat these central nervous system diseases. Dr. Prinz has authored more than 170 primary papers and reviews in high profile journals and has obtained extensive DFG and EU funding for his studies on macrophage biology in the CNS in mice and humans.
8 KEYNOTE SPEAKERS Dr JAYNE DANSKA Hospital for Sick Children University of Toronto, Canada Dr. Danska was raised in New York City, and educated in the United States at Kenyon College, Cornell University, Cold Spring Harbor Labs and Stanford University. She holds The Anne and Max Tanenbaum Chair in Molecular Medicine, is a Senior Scientist at the Hospital for Sick Children and a Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at University of Toronto with appointments in the Departments of Immunology, and Medical Biophysics. Her research is focused on defining the mechanisms underlying immune system diseases and application of this knowledge to improve their diagnosis, prevention and treatment. Her lab works on the genetic and environmental causes of autoimmune disease, particularly Type 1 diabetes (T1D), the molecular mechanisms of acute lymphoid leukemia (ALL), and innate immune surveillance of leukemia and leukemia stem cells. She has led multi-disciplinary projects applying genetic, genomic and immunological analysis to identify T1D-risk genes and to determine how these variants control autoimmune pathogenesis. An evolving focus is the roles of environmental factors in the rising rates of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, specifically the role of the intestinal microbiome in modifying inherited risk of autoimmunity in rodent models and in longitudinal studies in children with high genetic risk for type 1 and type 2 diabetes. This work is also investigating the impact of sex as a key determinant of autoimmune diseases, many of which are far more prevalent in females. In addition, Dr. Danska and her collaborators discovered a signaling pathway in macrophages pivotal to the survival of human normal hematopoietic stem cells and acute leukemia stem cells that sustain leukemic growth. They have developed a biologic therapy to manipulate this immune checkpoint to impair the survival of leukemia and other blood cell cancers that is now in clinical trials. Dr. Danska has an active training program of post-doctoral fellows, graduate students and technologists. She is a Chair of the College of Reviewers, Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and serves as a panel member and Chair in the Canadian Diabetes Association, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the Canadian Cancer Society and the National Institutes of Health (U.S). She is actively engaged in knowledge translation beyond the medical community to patients, their advocates and government policy makers.
