6 Malaria Transmission Humans are bitten by an infected female Anopheles mosquito The Plasmodium parasite reproduces in the person s liver and red blood cells Picked up through another mosquito bite and then spread to the next person
7 Malaria Life Cycle The life cycle of the malaria parasite (Plasmodium) occurs in both hosts The mosquito is the vector that carries the parasite back and forth, but the mosquito does not get sick The parasite grows first in the human liver and then is released into the bloodstream where it reproduces, causes symptoms and is picked up again by the mosquitoes The parasite moves to the mosquito s salivary glands within 10 days of biting an infected human
