2 Dear Delegate, The American Academy of Pediatrics and the Committee on Pediatric AIDS are delighted to welcome you to the inaugural annual course on pediatric and adolescent HIV. At a time of rapid change in the field of HIV, we hope the topics covered will both inform and update the experienced practitioner serving HIV-infected and exposed infants, children and adolescents within and outside the US. At the same time, the course targets pediatric residents and fellows during their training, to serve as a foundation in pediatric and adolescent HIV management, and for those wishing to embark upon subsequent or concurrent careers in Infectious Diseases, Immunology, Pathology, Adolescent and Adult Medicine, Epidemiology, or Global and International Child Health. We would like to thank our national and international partners, without whom this course would not have been possible and include the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society, the European Society on Paediatric Infectious Diseases, the Paediatric European Network on Treatment of AIDS, and St. Jude s Children s Research Hospital. Many of the confirmed course faculty, are from these esteemed organizations and institutions, and represent the forefront of cutting edge research in Pediatric and Adolescent HIV care and infectious diseases globally. All are leaders and renowned teachers who develop and contribute to HIV management guidelines for the US, Europe and the WHO. 3 COURSE DESCRIPTION The American Academy of Pediatrics, St. Jude Children s Research Hospital, European Network for Treatment of AIDS and The Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society will be sponsoring a course that will address all aspects of HIV management in infants, children, adolescents and young persons; and to present evidence-based data to optimize clinical practice. The course is intended for individuals that are interested in expanding their knowledge in HIV/AIDS care. LEARNING OBJECTIVES At the end of the course the participant will be: 1. Proficient in managing the infant exposed perinatally to HIV. 2. Able to provide recommendations on when to start antiretroviral therapy in the HIV-infected child/adolescent/young persons, and demonstrate knowledge of the individual drugs including toxicities and interactions. 3. Able to manage the many opportunistic infections and sexually transmitted infections associated with HIV infection. 4. Able to meet these objectives irrespective of setting. 5. Knowledgeable about the complexities and challenges of HIV care in adolescents/ young persons including disclosure, adherence, and sexual behaviour, and be able to formulate individual management plans.
