5 Project: Client: 94. A common bacteria widespread in nature and found on mammalian skin, particularly on the exposed skin of the face, arms, hands, and legs; not typically airborne. 99. The actual CFUs for this organism could not be determined due to overgrowth. 05. Due to the absence of supporting data, a definitive Genus could not be assigned.. Amorphous particles having no discernable characteristics that can be distinguished by light microscopy; typically mineral deposits, carbon deposits (soot), fine dust, or sand. 2. Natural or man made textile fibers (not including asbestos); typically from clothing, floor coverings (carpet), or upholstery. 3. Fragments of insulation material made from fine filaments of glass. 4. This culturable sample had no demonstrable bacterial growth. 5
6 Project: Client: General Comment Reference Page ONLY COMMENT NUMBERS INDICATED ON REPORT ARE RELEVANT. Mycotech Biological is not responsible for any errors resulting from improper or incorrect sampling procedures, atmospheric conditions at the time of sampling or during shipment, or from shipping conditions or methods. This is a known and documented aeroallergen. It may cause an allergic reaction to hypersensitive individuals at normal airborne concentrations. Chronic exposure, at above normal airborne concentrations, may also result in the sensitization and development of allergic disease in previously unaffected individuals. This fungus is an opportunistic pathogen. Many factors affect host contraction; however, this fungus will typically infect only those who are immuno-compromised. Immuno-compromization may be a function of age, sex, race, state of health, or nutrition. Individuals exposed to immunotherapy, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunosuppressant drugs, or who have contracted an immunological disorder, are at greater risk of infection. As with other diseases, opportunistic infections may be contracted by a variety of potential routes including injection, ingestion, skin contact, and/or respiration. Various species within this Genus/Group have been documented as producing mycotoxins. Mycotoxins represent a wide variety of secondary metabolites produced by fungi that have been documented as toxic to humans. borne mycotoxin concentrations and their specific relationship to human health has not been established to date. This fungus is believed to be an aeroallergen; however, this fungus did not produce spores in laboratory culture. Without sporulation, a formal taxa cannot be determined and are collectively termed sterile. CFU values are not given for this sampling technique The observed revealed characteristics that are consistent with fungal growth. The observed represented desiccated/unorganized hyphal fragments that are not representative of established fungal growth. The presence of this is common to typical dust and. A common bacteria found on the skin, skin glands, and mucosa of mammals and birds; opportunistic pathogen, not Staphylococcus aureus; also common to human environments, not typically airborne. A common bacterium of mammalian skin and mucous membranes. A few species are found in a variety of environmental habitats. A widely distributed bacteria in nature, also found in human and animal intestinal tracts. An opportunistic human pathogen. Found in the inanimate environment (soil and activated sludge). Pathogenicity is considered low. A common spore-forming bacteria producing some types of food poisoning (spores are airborne). Opportunistic pathogen. Laboratory Manager Mycotech Biological, Inc. 6 End Of Report
7 Fungal and Bacterial Guidelines Culturable Fungal Bioaerosol Analyses All data are enumerated in concentrations of colony forming units per cubic meter of sampled air (CFU/m3). Research indicates that typical indoor levels for indoor fungal bioaerosols are below a total of 300 colony forming units (CFU) per cubic meter (m3). With the exception of Cladosporium, no individual organism should contribute more than 50 CFU/m3 to the total. In general, indoor populations should be consistent with outdoor populations. Concentrations exceeding 300 CFU/m3 and/or not meeting the individual 50 CFU/m3 criteria should incite some additional level of investigation with respect to a potential bias from prominent outdoor bioaerosols, inadequate air filtration, poor housekeeping, excessive indoor humidity and/or micro-humidity environments, and/or other potential indigenous contamination sources. These recommendations are suggested as general guidelines only. The author recommends caution on the use of any bioaerosol data and/or any specific remedial recommendation based solely on bioaerosol findings. Additionally, the >300 CFU/m3 is not intended to represent a threshold value having a medical or health significance with respect to exposure, nor is it necessarily representative of an unacceptable indoor environment. Rather, it is intended to be a reactionary threshold to incite further investigation as to the cause(s) of what is considered to be an above average concentration for culturable indoor bioaerosols. Concentrations of fungi and associated allergenic components have been documented to vary by orders of magnitude with respect to indoor environments. To date, there is no data that supports a threshold limit or dose-response relationship for exposure to fungal aeroallergens. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), as well as other occupational health related associations, have not established permissible exposure levels (PEL), recommended exposure limits (REL), or other limit values for aeroallergens. Culturable Bacterial Bioaerosol Analyses All data are enumerated in concentrations of colony forming units per cubic meter of sampled air (CFU/m3). No research is currently of record that indicates typical and/or acceptable levels for indoor bacterial bioaerosols. The MBI database containing numerous samples collected under similar indoor circumstances generally suggest that Bacillus, Micrococcus, Staphylococcus, and other gram-positive bacteria typically dominate indoor environments. Total indoor concentrations for these organisms are typically in the range of 250 CFU/m3; however, greater concentration can occur relative to activity level. Bacillus is considered to be the most common airborne bacteria. Other than Bacillus anthraxis, this extremely diverse genus has not been implicated in significant respiratory disease in man. Anthrax, the disease caused by B. anthraxis, is typically associated with the sheep and cattle industry. Micrococcus and Staphylococcus are considered human source bacteria that are frequently isolated in environments that are occupied by humans. These organisms are considered part of the common flora associated with human skin. Some species are considered to be opportunistic pathogens; however, the mode of contraction typically involves a cut, scrape, or other wound to the skin. Respiratory related disorders are rare and typically implicate individuals with immunocompromised systems. Indoor environments dominated by gram negative bacteria or Actinomyces are considered atypical and warrant further investigation as to a cause to this unusual indoor bacterial bioaerosol. Total Bioaerosol Sampling Total bioaerosol/particulate sampling was performed to identify and characterize general fungal and particulate concentrations. All components were individually reported in particles per cubic meter (Part/m3). Morphologically distinct fungal components were identified to genus. Aspergillus/Penicillium-like references spherical, morphologically indistinguishable -3 micron spores. Other particulate was identified into general categories of pollen, cellulose fibers, man made mineral fibers (MMMF)-(fiberglass insulation, not asbestos), insect parts, etc. Debris represents a collective category containing amorphous, non-distinct components between -0 microns. No scientifically peer reviewed research is currently of record that indicates typical and/or acceptable levels for total (culturable and non-culturable) indoor fungal bioaerosols. The MBI database generally suggests that total bioaerosols within indoor environments are typically below 00 particles (Part) per cubic meter (m3). The principal fractions are typically due to the presence of Aspergillus/Penicillium-like and Cladosporium components having a concentration not exceeding 650 Part/m3, each. The remaining fraction is typically recovered from a variety of fungi including Alternaria, Drechslera, ascospores, and basidiospores. Partially decomposed insect parts, plant pollen, cellulose, and insulation fibers are also commonly identified from indoor samples; however, no indoor concentration criteria have been specifically determined for these contaminants. Concentrations exceeding 00/m3 and/or not meeting the individual criteria should incite some additional level of investigation as noted above. These recommendations are suggested as general guidelines only. The author recommends caution on the use of any bioaerosol data and/or any specific remedial recommendation based solely on bioaerosol findings. Additionally, the >00 Part/m3 is not intended to represent a threshold value having a medical or health significance with respect to exposure, nor is it necessarily representative of an unacceptable indoor environment. Rather, it is intended to be a reactionary threshold to incite further investigation as to the cause(s) of what is considered to be an above average concentration for culturable indoor bioaerosols.
