Selected Presentation from the INSTAAR Monday Noon Seminar Series. Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research, University of Colorado at Boulder Sep Mervi Hjelmroos-Koski, School of Public Health, University of California, Berkeley. "Worldwide travelers without a passport." Seminar given at INSTAAR, University of Colorado. Copyright 2003 Mervi Hjelmroos-Koski. All Rights Reserved. Hjelmroos-Koski presentation (2.6 Mb PDF). Abstract Most pollen grains are deposited within few hundred meters of their source. Under certain meteorological conditions biological material is injected higher into the atmosphere where it can be transported across continents and seas at distances of thousands of kilometers. Downward air movements associated with condensation and precipitation will redeposit the pollen grains with other transported material. Pollen grains can be carried on larger particles, and the pollen grain itself acts as a transport surface for smaller particles and aerosols. Measured with a continuous volumetric air sampler, not only the concentration but also the time, within a 30-minute window, for the deposition can be calculated. By identifying areas of potential vegetation sources, transported biological material, weather conditions, and air mass pathways, the origin for long distance depositions is determined.

Exposure Assessment Tailored to an Epidemiology Study = The Fresno Asthmatic Children s Study: FACES l Focus is progression of asthma l Relationship between daily exposures and acute symptoms, medication use l Relevant exposure is daily, but for several years l 250 subjects--children with asthma

The Fresno Asthmatic Children s Study: FACES Supported by California Air Resources Board Contracts Nos and supplemented by US Environmental Protection Agency Office of Transportation and Air Quality The statements and conclusions in this talk are those of the author and not necessarily those of the California Air Resources Board. The mention of commercial products, their source or their use in connection with material reported herein is not to be construed as actual or implied endorsement of such products.

Exposure Assessment Hypothesis for FACES Air pollutants may be grouped on the basis of the principal determinants of their spatial variability in concentration: l Regional pollutants l Neighborhood pollutants l Home specific agents

Overview of Exposure Assessment for FACES l Temporal--Daily samples at Central Site (US EPA Supersite) l Spatial relationships--measurements & modeling n Throughout Fresno n Neighborhood factors n Outdoors vs. Indoors n Home characteristics

Agents of Interest l Particles by size PM 2.5, PM 10 n Mass n OC/EC n Sulfate, nitrate, & ammonium ions n Metals, potassium l Gases n No, No 2 n Ozone n So 2 l Second Hand Smoke l Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (total & speciated) l Biological agents n Pollen grains n Fungal spores n Airborne endotoxin n Allergens in house dust Dust mites Cat dander Dog dander

Group I Agents--Regional Level l PM 2.5 sulfate l PM 2.5 nitrate l PM 2.5 ammonium l SO 2 l Ozone l (Pollen Grains)

Group II Agents-- Neighborhood Level l PM 2.5 & PM mass l PM & PM 2.5 elemental & organic C l PM 2.5 & PM metals l Ozone (near heavily traveled roadways) l NO, NO 2 l Pollen grains l Fungal spores (outdoor sources) l PM 10 endotoxin (outdoor sources)

Group III Agents--Home Specific Level l PM 2.5 & PM mass l PM 2.5 elemental & organic carbon l PM metals l NO, NO 2 l Fungal spores (indoor sources & infiltration) l Pollen grains (infiltration) l PM 10 endotoxin (indoor sources & infiltration) l Second hand smoke Allergens (dog, cat, dust mite & cockroach)

Exposure Model l Daily data from the Central Site l Spatial relationships between the Central Site concentrations and those measured at specific homes, in specific neighborhoods, or types of neighborhoods l Indoor/outdoor relationships for types of homes l Home specific data for indoor sources of selected agents l Time-location-activity data for participants
