9 Gut microbiota, consists of a complex community of microorganism species is the largest reservoir of microorganisms living mutually with humans. The human body carries about 100 trillion microorganisms in its intestines, a number ten times greater than the total number of human cells in the body. The complex ecological system has been difficult to study because the organisms are anaerobic and killed by exposure to oxygen.

11 Faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) Faecal bacteria from a healthy individual is transplanted into a recipient suffering from C. difficile infection. This introduces healthy bacterial flora through infusion of a stool, e.g. by enema, orogastric tube or orally in the form of a capsule containing freeze dried material, obtained from a healthy donor.

12 Probiotics promote healthy intestinal flora to support bowel function, they help maintain digestive balance by promoting good bacteria levels and they promote the growth of beneficial intestinal bacteria. The European Food Safety Authority has ruled out all of these claims as there is not enough evidence to suggest a cause and effect relationship.
