1 The Phylaxis Notes Of The Phylaxis Society 2012 CONVENTION - JACKSON. MISSISIPPI PHOTO ESSAY PRE-CONVENTION Our 2012 convention held in Jackson Mississippi is now over. Once again, our members, new and old, expressed gratification with and praise for the outcome. The hospitality shown to us by members of Stringer Grand Lodge and by members of the Maurice E. Lucas, Sr. Chapter of the Phylaxis Society was outstanding. Even though we imposed a change of venue and moved the convention at the last minute to the Hilton Garden Hotel, the hotel, the grand lodge, and Lucas Chapter bent over backwards to accommodate our needs. 8 Some members are in Jackson on Monday and Tuesday (figure 1 and 2). The Lucas Chapter arranges for them to lunch at the Penguin Restaurant (figure 3 and 5) a block 7 from the grand lodge building, part-owned by several members of the grand lodge. The grand lodge and the restaurant are across from the Jackson State University complex, which was part of a tour on Thursday. Members wait in the TUESDAY EVENING

2 The Phylaxis Notes of The Phylaxis Society hotel lobby for transportation to the Penguin (figure 4). The Jackson train station and bus station are conveniently located across the street from the hotel (figure 6). Tuesday evening is reserved for social activity (figure 7 11). Some visit the hospitality suite (figure 7 and 11). Grand Master Maurice Lucas (MS) entertains visiting grand masters and others in the hotel lobby (figure 8); Grand Master Cleveland Wilson (AR) sits in the bottom right corner, and Grand Master Wilbert Curtis (TX) sits next to him. Grand Master Lucas and VP Ulysses Cooper are in the center of the photo seated. The registration office opens on Wednesday morning (figure 14 and 15). The first official meeting is the Council of Fellows (figure 16), which is followed by a meeting of WEDNESDAY MORNING 14 the Board of Directors (figure 17 and 18). The biannual reception for recipients of the Jno G. Lewis and the Bryce E. Simmons Medals of Excellence is held on Wednesday evening (figures 19 to 23 ). Grand Worthy Matron Alford (3 rd from right in figure 22) poses with members of grand chapter. President Brumfield (4 th from right in figure 23) poses with Phyllis Chapter members. The joint official opening and memorial service (figures 24 to 33) is held on Thursday morning. During the opening, the lamp of knowledge is lit for the Phylaxis Society (figure 28), and it remains lit throughout the convention (figure 31). Host Grand Matron Alford (second from left) sits with visiting grand matrons (figure 29). After the opening, members visit the gift shop exhibit WEDNESDAY EVENING

3 The Phylaxis Notes of The Phylaxis Society 24 THURSDAY MORNING OPENING The Phylaxis Notes of the Phylaxis Society A Society for Prince Hall Freemasons Who Seek More Light and Who Have Light to Impart (figure 34) operated by Mrs. Lorraine Harvey (far left) and VP Cooper (foreground). Just before noon on Thursday, the traditional Afrocentric bus tour (figures 35 to 46) begins. President Williams announces that the first stop on the tour will be the historic and exclusive King Edwards Hotel, notorious during the Fifties and Sixties for its exclusion of blacks; it closed its doors during the Civil Rights Era rather than allow blacks use of its facilities. After years of neglect, the hotel was purchased by blacks and renovated. It became the Hilton Garden Inn, the hotel that hosted our convention! 3 Copyright All rights reserved. 5 MASONIC AND OES VISITATION The Phylaxis Notes of The Phylaxis Society After loading the bus and the vans (figures 36 and 46), we stopped for lunch (figures 39 to 41). This excellent, cafeteria-style restaurant is owned and operated by an African-American. A main stop on the tour was the Old Capitol Museum (figures 42 to 45). The museum has more pearls of African-American history than expected. One exhibit features the Mississippi Black codes (figure 44), and another features Mississippi s first Black speaker of the house, John Roy Lynch (figure 45) who became speaker in The grand lodge is on a street named after Lynch. Later we are at the grand lodge where the ladies have an OES visitation (figures 48 and 50) and the men have a Masonic visitation (figures 47 and 49). Friday is when the Masonic workshops begin (figures 51 to 55). Presenters on Friday include Brother Adrian Cooley (IL) (figure 56), Brother A. Tehuti Evans (DC) (figure 57), and President Emeritus Tommy Rigmaiden (TX) (figures 58 and 59). The daughter of PGM Howard Woods is given a token of respect after her father is inducted into the Harry A. Williamson Masonic Hall of Fame (figure 60). President Rigmaiden and Grand Master Cleveland Wilson are also inducted into the Hall of Fame (figure 61). Presentations are made by Brother Michael Delgado (GA) (figure 62), Brother Willard Spires (MS) (figure 63), Brother Alton Roundtree (DC) (fig- WORKSHOPS
