1 Course program and reading list Semester 1 Year 2018 School: Baruch Ivcher School of Psychology Mindfulness a scientific and experient Lecturer: Dr. Nava Levit-Binnun navalb@idc.ac.il Course No.: 8998 Course Type : Elective Course Requirements : Final Paper Prerequisites Prerequisite: Introduction To Psychology Weekly Hours : 2 Group Code : Language: English Credit: 2 Course Description In this course, we will learn about the concept of Mindfulness in two levels- theoretical and experiential. On the theoretical level, we will meet previous attempts to define the term of mindfulness in a theoretical sense. We will get familiar with Mindfulness-based treatment methods as well as with brain and psychological research investigating the effectiveness of the treatment. On the experiential level, we will experience one of the most studied mindfulness protocols: the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR). Course Goals The purpose of the course is to expose the students to the scientific, theoretical, and clinical knowledge related to mindfulness practice, as well as with some of the mindfulnessbased interventions which exists nowadays regarding the use of attention and awareness exercises (mindfulness training) for the cultivation of health and well-being. In order to achieve this purpose, the course will combine theoretical learning with practical experience. In the theoretical part, the students will acquire theoretical knowledge of the mindfulness approach, the Buddhist roots of the practice, the adaptation to Western treatment and training approaches, and some of the most pronounced scientific and clinical knowledge that was collected. Furthermore, we will become familiar with established mindfulnessbased treatment methods MBSR, ACT, DBT, and MBCT and their implementations in various fields. In the experiential part, the purpose is to connect the theoretical knowledge with participants' personal experience. In orde r to achieve personal experience, the experiential part will be based on the practice protocol of MBSR (mindfulness-based stress reduction), the most studied protocol among the different mindfulness programs. At the base of the MBSR program, there is a group process that enables the cultivation of a state of being characterized b y a certain awareness and attention quality (the mindfulness quality). This ability allows one to practice and act with attent ive awareness, and be attentive to the body, both during rest and in motion. This course includes a weekly practice in clas s, as well as home practice (about minutes a day) which includes filling a practice log and reflection. The aim of the course is to enable the students to self-examine the effects of mindfulness training, while being able to understand and ex plain how and why these practices can be relevant in the clinical-therapeutic field.
2 Seminar requirements: 1. Practice 5 days a week for at least 20 minutes a day, including sitting and/or walking and/or awareness through mo vement (according to instructions you will receive during the course). At the end of the course, you will be asked to submit a reflection paper about the process you had undergone. 2. Participation in all the meetings. Since this course is about going through a deep transformative process, absences or arriving late to class will impede the teacher's ability to assess and grade participants. More than 2 absences (even if ju stified and approved) will lead to a grade decrease. With over 3 absences, you will not be able to receive a grade on your p articipation in the course. More than fifteen minutes late is considered an absence. 3. Mandatory Reading/listening (articles or videos) assignments during the semester. 4. Mandatory submission of the final assignment at the end of the course. Grading As mentioned, the course consists of two parts- experiential and theoretical. The experiential part will constitute 20% of the final grade: In this part we will get a taste of the concept of mindfulness. We will understand first-hand the practice requirements, its complexity, the struggles that may arise, the resistances, the process and perhaps some of its fruits. By deciding to take the course, participants take upon themselves a 13-week commitment of time, and effort. If difficulties will rise (and there is a great chance they will) it is necessary to communicate them with me in order for you to continue to be committed to the process in the way that is most beneficial to you and the group. The experiential part includes practice in class and in home, for about minutes a day. You will be asked to accompany the home practice with a practice log. Based on this log/diary, at the end of the semester you will be asked to perform a process of reflection of your whole experiential part. The theoretical part will constitute 80% of the final grade: The assignments during the semester will constitute 20% of the grade. These will include reading assignments or watching videos and answering guided questions. The final assignment of the theoretical part will include a guided summary paper (60%). Submission date of the final assignment will be announced during the semester. Learning Outcomes Students will develop/enhance some level of personal mindfulness skill, and gain an understanding regarding the practice, its challenges, and why it has become so popular in the clinical setting as well as other fields. Students will also gain acquaintance with the leading mindfulness-based/inspired interventions, as well as the scientific field that deals with these kind of interventions (and develop critical thinking towards the scientific data) Lecturer Office Hours Office hours are flexible, by prior arrangement. navalb@idc.ac.il Teaching Assistant Teaching assistant in this course will be Hilan Navot hilanavot@gmail.com
3 Additional Notes It is not possible to derive the most out of the course without a significant home practice and attending all the meetings. The majority of the classes will include at least half an hour to an hour and a half of meditation or yoga practice, as well as a short discussion and questions related to the practice. Therefore, attendance in this course is mandatory. You must participate in all classes and all meditation practices. Please bring a pillow for sitting and/or a yoga mattress.
