Module 2: Exploring the Energetic Welcome to the world of energy! We continue our adventure at the interface of the physical and the energetic, unpacking, discovering the wonders of the physical body, the fascinating world of physiology, the physical connection through touch, body work and observation, the relationship with the environment and stress. This manual will be a powerful helper and a great resource for you as you move through this 8-month immersion, complete with four modules moving through the physical, energetic, emotional and spiritual aspects of well-being. Our Relationship with Energy and it s ability to connect Our focus during the second module is exploring the nature of energy, how it moves and shifts within us and our relationships, how understanding it facilitates connection and communication with all things. At our essence we are energy - if we take our bodies down to their elements, at our essence we are atoms and energy. Because of this, we are capable of incredible healing, quantum shifts and what we may label as miracles when we provide the conditions for them to occur. Understanding ourselves and our horses as energetic beings allows a greater sense of equality, connection and understanding, translating into a potential for partnership that has been unrivalled until this moment in time. Energy makes up everything that is us, or our horses, or the food that we all eat. In fact it is the very essence of each cell of every animate object and each particle of every inanimate object. Energy flows and moves in different frequencies and makes up our blood, bones, muscles and organs. It is the composer who miraculously creates harmony in our thousands of bodily processes. The fact that to the majority, this energy is intangible, does not mean that it doesn t exist. We can feel it if we stand in the middle of a crowded city, or if we stand at the edge of a peaceful forest. Most importantly, we can feel it with our horses. In this module, we will focus in on the Sacral and Solar Plexus Chakras, the two remaining energy centres of our base or root. Like the Root chakra, these two centres relate to survival and safety and the meeting of our base needs, but also expand more deeply into this exploration. The Sacral Chakra is also known as the sexual or creativity chakra - it s element is water and it s colour is orange. The Solar Plexus chakra is represented by yellow and it s element is fire - it relates to our identity and sense of self.!1

We ll be having a closer look at the whole meridian system, as this is one way that life force or qi moves through the body, but we ll be honing in on the Wood and Water Elements of the Traditional Chinese Medicine, consisting of the Liver and Gallbladder Meridians for Wood and the Kidney and Bladder for Water. All of these meridians run through the hind quarters and affect safety, healthy boundaries, reproduction, nervous system function, water balance and much more! The endocrine we ll be working with is the adrenals, a gland focused on keeping us safe, which is connected to the Kidney and Bladder meridians. The physical systems we ll be exploring during the second module are the nervous system, the cerebrospinal system and the fascial system. We ll be looking at the herbs, supplements, vitamins and minerals that build the well-being of these important systems, as well as simple ways to help bring them into balance easily. Balancing Chakras Horses do not see and feel the world in the same way that we do. Instead of identifying individual objects as trees or people or cars, they see different frequencies of energy, some moving faster than others. A moving object, such as a leaf or a plastic bag, could therefore easily be misconstrued as a living thing as the frequency is the same, and provoke the flight response in even the calmest of horses. This truth is accepted (as we have all experienced a horse who has jumped out of their skin at a leaf or a piece of paper) but very hard to understand for the human mind. From a young age, horses are taught by their mothers about the ways of energy. Energetic boundaries or lack thereof between horses and their herd mates, the innate ability to sense danger, and the uncanny knack at identifying incongruency are only a few examples. If you watch closely, you may also notice that the way a mare takes care of her foal is remarkably similar to the way an energy healer works. She will naturally hold certain areas of the body or rub the spine, or move her foal s head up and down with her neck. It may be a stretch, but one might assume, from the distinct areas she is working with, that she is helping to balance her colt s energy centres. Balancing your horse s energy centres will go a long way towards their overall health and well-being. There are major benefits for the digestive tract and the functioning of all the internal organs and systems as a whole, as well as the structural system. In fact, the benefits are increased by the fact that this re-balancing is not only working on the physical level, but also helping emotionally, mentally and behaviourally to decrease stress, restore zest for life and increase feelings of safety and willingness. It is a common belief that there are only certain people that can do energy work or healing. Happily, this is far from the truth. The reality is that anyone with a positive intention can help their horse to feel healthier and more balanced. After all, we are all made up of energy and are each capable of using this energy in a positive way. In fact you can positively influence the!2

harmony of your horse s energy centres just by holding a hand over them with a positive intention (visualize what you would like to happen in this area. For example, I visualize enhanced flow, balance and harmony) and an open and present mind. Make sure to listen for body language and signs of release. Incredibly, your horse will tell you exactly where to hold and for how long if you are able to pay attention. Signs of release indicating a return to balance include licking and chewing, sighing, yawning and even a bowel movement. Sacral Chakra The second chakra is often referred to as the sacral chakra (orange). This is the chakra which is responsible for our creativity and sexuality, and when out of balance it can translate into digestive or hormonal imbalance, lower back pain, bladder problems or even issues with possessiveness or jealousy. It is located in horses in the area across the hips. Solar Plexus Chakra The third chakra is the solar plexus chakra (yellow). A chakra related to self-esteem and confidence, willingness, and digestion of experience, this chakra shows its imbalance through lack of will, low energy, digestive discomfort and overall toxicity. To balance gently run hand up and down spine or place hand on belly area several hand widths behind the front legs or just behind the withers. This balancing technique is very effective for any horse experiencing digestive discomfort as it works to re-establish harmony in the digestive and elimination organs!3

The Chinese Clock The Chinese clock, also referred to as the Body- Energy Clock, is based on the concept that there is a cyclical ebb and flow of energy throughout the body throughout every f24-hour period. During a full day, our Qi moves in two-hour periods through the 12 organ systems. Not surprisingly, during sleep, Qi draws inward to restore the body, completing it s cycle between 1 and 3 a.m., with the liver cleansing the blood and getting ready for the Qi to head back into circulation. In the 12-hour period following Liver time, the Qi moves into the organs associated with daily activity, digestion and elimination: the lungs, large intestine, stomach/pancreas, heart, small intestine. By mid-afternoon, energy again moves inward to support internal organs associated with restoring and maintaining the system. The purpose is to move fluids and heat, as well as to filter and cleanse by the pericardium, triple burner (coordinates water functions and temperature), bladder/kidneys and the liver. It is important to remember that when one organ is at its peak, it s opposite organ is at it s weakest. The healthiest way to use this information, is to try to plan daily activities around an organ system s peak energy and avoid things that can tax a system when its energy is at its lowest ebb.!4

The Wood Element The five Elements as outlined in Traditional Chinese Medicine represent the elemental frequencies of the body - the understanding is that these five elements combine to manifest the universe as well as the physical body. In Module 2 we ll be looking at both the element of Wood and the element of Water. Each of these elements has corresponding yin and yang meridians that move Qi or life force and blood throughout the body. The Wood element relates to the qualities of movement or wind, new growth and the beginning of expansion, the emotion of anger, our sense of sight and planning and decision-making. Yin Organ: Liver (1-3am) Yin organs are more dense and more interior and are essential to the continuation of life. They produce Qi and blood and are responsible for the maintenance of life. The Liver network includes the liver, the Liver meridian, parts of the brain influenced by the Liver channel (planning in particular) and all the the fascia. It rules the throat and groin, regulates the eyes and sight, and protects the chest. The Liver is responsible for monitoring the body s activity and regulating the amount of Blood available for circulation - when there is imbalance and not enough blood, it can lead to muscle soreness, spasms, cramps, numbness and weakness. The Liver also directs the Wei Qi energy, which protects us from invasion by pathogens, climatic and emotional factors. Liver Meridian functions: Stores Blood - manages volume Spreads Qi - regulates circulation of Blood and Fluids Spreads Wei Qi - provides protection and awareness Controls sinews - nourishes and strengthens the muscles Manages boundaries - controls anger and Wei Qi Regulates the eyes - health and vision Controls planning - helps us to see our way in life Generates anger - keeps things moving, expressing emotions Houses the Ethereal Soul - synthesizes life to produce wisdom!5

Muscles related to the Liver Meridian: Rhomboids, Pectoralis Major Sternal!6

Yang Organ: Gallbladder (11pm-1am) Yang organs are hollow, more exterior and more dispensable. They store but do not produce. The Stomach helps the Spleen to fulfill its function. It begins the digestive process and helps accept nourishing food. The Stomach is strongest in the morning. Breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, dinner like a pauper. Gallbladder Meridian functions: Receives food and drink - allows good food/thoughts - rejects poison Digests food - breaks down food and thoughts Transports Nutritive Qi - to give strength to the body and limbs Descends Qi - keeps food and emotions moving down Generates Fluids - extracts Pure Fluids, send to the Lungs Generates Worry - to allow conscious thought Muscles related to the Gallbladder meridian: Popliteus, Anterior Deltoid!7

The Water Element The Water element relates to the qualities of cold or cooling, contraction, the emotion of fear, our sense of hearing and the ears, willpower and procreation/reproduction, and activity within the nervous system and brain (to stay alive). Yin Organ: Kidney (5-7pm) Yin organs are more dense and more interior and are essential to the continuation of life. They produce Qi and blood and are responsible for the maintenance of life. The Kidney meridian is the source of both Water and Fire in the body - the Kidney Yin energy is the source of all the yin energy in the body and supplies all the other yin organs. In the same respect, the Kidney Yang energy provides all the Yang energy to the organs to act and perform their important functions. The Kidneys are the storehouse for all of our life force energy, hence, it is often referred to as the meridian of life and death. When Kidney Qi because depleted, we age, when it is gone, we die. The Kidneys store and rule our Essence, meaning that they rule the core of our body, including the bones, spinal cord, and nervous system this means that weak Kidneys will leave us with a poorly functioning brain and memory. As they are the roots of life, the Kidneys generate fear to keep us safe and alive and rule sexual function and reproduction. Weak kidneys often pair with fear, confusion and indecision.!10

Kidney Meridian functions: Store Essence - Qi reserves Produce Marrow - generates bones, spine and nervous system Govern water - regulate balance through urination Generate fear - to keep us safe Control the knees - to run from danger Help the lungs inhale - Govern hearing/ears - nourish the ears Control hair - nourish hair Control fertility - health of reproductive organs Store Original Qi - the energy from their parents Warm digestion - House the Will - the will to live and achieve goals Muscles related to the Kidney Meridian: Psoas, Iliacus, Upper Trapezius!11

Yang Organ: Bladder (7-9pm) Yang organs are hollow, more exterior and more dispensable. They store but do not produce. The Bladder helps the Kidneys to do their big job! It is key in regulating sensual and sexual function. Fears and insecurities and even jealousy and resentment are common signs of Bladder imbalance. Bladder Meridian functions: Stores urine - for release Clears water - by releasing urine Generates fear - to keep us safe Releases anger - encourages emotional expression (being pissed off) Muscles related to the Bladder meridian: Sacrospinalis, Posterior and Anterior Tibialis, Peroneus!12

Planting a Horsey Herb Garden For healthy nervous system function Because the digestive tract is such an important part of our horses, this should definitely be an area of concentration. Planting herbs that de-toxify, calm, and tonify the digestive tract can be very helpful for most horses. Many of these herbs are calming for horses experiencing colic type symptoms, as well as gastric upset or ulceration. They also can provide much needed nutrients. These herbs include: Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) This lovely herb calms the nervous system, boosts blood flow to the brain, improves memory and clarity, and helps to cleanse the liver. Valerian Root (Valeriana officinalis) Used as a sedative for the nervous system due in part to it s influence on the cerebrospinal system, relives pain and promotes sleep. Sage (Salvia officinalis) Anti-imflammatory, anti-septic, anti-bacterial, calming for the nervous system, relieves indigestion, reduces muscle tension and improves memory Chamomile, German (Matricaria recutita) Great for a hard-working horse as it contains calcium, potassium and magnesium to replenish muscles. Can be very calming for the stressed or agitated horse. As we know stress can have a large effect on the digestive tract as well as the rest of the body. Before planting, be sure to check whether this herbs is allowed by competitions as they have sedative properties. For the kidneys and adrenal glands Rosehips - great source of Vitamin A and C, anti-inflammatory, supportive of the kidneys, heals the skin, high in antioxidants, good for the immune system.!13

Research/Pondering Questions for Module 1 How does the nervous system function? What are some of it s most important roles in the body? What are 2-3 ways the nervous system can show imbalance? What role(s) does the adrenal glands play in the body? How is this connected to the function of the nervous system? What are some of the signs of adrenal exhaustion? Why is it better to eat a big meal in the morning rather than the evening? What are 2 changes you can make for you or your horse that will get you more in tune with the Chinese clock?!14
