7 PREFACE TO THE FOURTH EDITION The third edition of this Atlas was published in 1992 and is now out of print. We decided to produce the fourth edition in CD-ROM as it will be more affordable to the users in the developing countries where parasitic diseases are specially important. Many new illustrations have been added, but the essential features remain the same as in the third edition. The atlas (CD) has four sections, the first has the life cycle drawings, the second has colour photographs of protozoa and helminths, the third has electron micrographs and radiographs, the fourth arthropods of medical importance. Various forms of microscopy have been used and this is indicated in the text in the following abbreviations: 1. Interference contrast (IC) 2. Phase contrast (PC) 3. Dark field (DF) 4. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) 5. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) The Atlas is meant to be an illustrated guide to the subject as it covers only the basic morphology and important diagnostic features. It does not include rare and infrequently seen parasites. The magnifications given are approximate and no size comparisons are to be made unless so stated in the text. The book which accompanies the CD has line drawings which we hope will help in clarifying the structural details of selected parasites. The book also covers clinical aspects, laboratory diagnosis and treatment of parasites. This information will be useful for medical students and doctors to whom this book is mainly directed. We wish you a happy reading.
