1 Course Overview: It s Natural to Be Health: Introduction to Maharishi Ayurveda Course Syllabus Lesson 1: Locating your body s own inner intelligence to help create balance in your physiology Lesson 2: Ayurvedic body-mind types and the basis of digestion - the three doshas. Lesson 3: Fundamental guidelines for healthy diet, digestion, and food according to Maharishi Ayurveda. Lesson 4: The power of digestion and how to detox. Lesson 5: Exercise, Yoga and Daily Routine Lesson 6: Future Programs to Create Balance Lesson 1 The secret to maintaining perfect health is to utilize your body s own inner intelligence. This is the same intelligence at the basis of the whole physical universe. Maharishi Ayurveda provides a guide to help you effortlessly access this deep level of intelligence in your mind and body. With the knowledge of Maharishi Ayurveda as a guide to effortlessly access this deep level of intelligence, you can have a balanced mind and body at the same time. It s Natural When we think of health we think of Nature. We look around and see everything growing, evolving, expanding. Modern medicine is identifying Blue Zones where more people life longer and healthier lives. Why? Research has found that these people live a natural lifestyle that includes a healthy diet, daily exercise, and a low stress life that incorporates family, purpose, religion, and meaning. 2 Ayurveda The oldest continuously practiced system of natural medicine is Ayurveda from ancient India. It literally means the Science of Lifespan And Ayurveda says the same thing: To live long Have a balanced diet Exercise regularly Live a purposeful life in harmony with Nature Ayurveda Ayus = Life Veda = Science Ayurveda = Science of Life Value of Prevention from Ancient Texts One who wishes happiness should counteract with therapeutic approaches before the disorder is produced, or when it is newly arisen. Charak Samhita, Sutrasthan, Avoid misery before it arises. Yoga Sutra, 2.16 Good health stands at the very root of right action, acquirement of wealth, fulfillment of desires, and enlightenment. 3 What Is Maharishi Ayurveda? To eat delicious food that is fresh, organic and suited to our mind and body Have a balanced routine of life, in tune with the cycles of nature Learn to take our pulse to measure balance Understand how to adjust our diet and lifestyle to be in tune with the seasons Learn to unfold the hidden genius within by practicing meditation Learn to use some simple purification techniques to keep the body channels clear Natural behavior that nourishes us and everyone In the 1980 s Maharishi Mahesh Yogi revived Ayurveda, with several of the greatest Ayurvedic physicians; This is called Maharishi Ayurveda The main thing that Maharishi brought back to Ayurveda was the knowledge of consciousness- the inner intelligence of the body - at the basis of the mind-body system How do we live in harmony with Nature? Nature is harmonious Nature moves in cycles All the laws of nature exist within us We can access the laws of nature in meditation Ayurveda gives simple guidelines to live in tune with nature Syllabus -Intro Maharishi Ayurveda Page 3 3/26/13
4 Use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine According to a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association, 40% of Americans and more than two-thirds of the world population use complementary or alternative therapies Since 1990, Americans have increased their use of such therapies by 30% and paid $27 billion in out-of-pocket expenses Lifestyle medicine is a new area of preventive medicine, which shows that many chronic diseases, such as heart disease, can be prevented and even reversed by simple changes in diet, exercise, and stress management. Another new area of medicine is personalized medicine which identifies genetic and metabolic differences between individuals and then prescribes drugs and treatment programs based on those differences. The field of nutrigenomics studies how food or nutrients can influence the expression genes in the body. Here we see a scientific verification of the ancient Ayurvedic principle that food is medicine Doshas and Gene Expression Recent studies have shown that the three basic governing principles of Ayurveda called the Doshas are correlated with specific groups of genes and physiological functions in the body. 5 To live in tune with Nature is easy. We just need to allow the mind to become calm, and yet more alert. This is easily accomplished by Transcendental Meditation. 7 Holistic Approach Individualized lifestyle counseling in terms of diet, digestion and routine Vedic Exercise with Yoga Asanas and Pranyama Using herbal preparations for health and rejuvenation (Dravya Guna) Purification procedures (Panchakarma) Environmental Health, near environment (Vedic architecture) Environmental Health, distant environment (Maharishi Jyotish and Yagya) Collective health/world peace: the group dynamics of consciousness Let s Start With The Pulse Environmental Health, near environment (Vedic architecture) Environmental Health, distant environment (Maharishi Jyotish and Yagya) Collective health/world peace: the group dynamics of consciousness It is highly health-promoting to feel the pulse innocently several times a day, even without having the detailed intellectual knowledge about the pulse. Just by having one s attention on the pulse, the inner intelligence and self-healing power of the body gets enlivened. In addition we become more alert to the needs of our body, and are thereby able to live spontaneously more in accord with all the Laws of Nature. Self Pulse Reading Practice Take your pulse for a minute. What do you feel in the pulse? Write down what you felt. Hint: The pulse may feel fast or slow, clear or faint, soft or hard, warm or cool. 8 Health Tip for the Day Maharishi Ayurveda recommends a good daily routine, in tune with the rhythms of nature. Take a brisk walk ( or any gentle exercise you enjoy) until your breathing increases significantly and you begin to perspire. Be in nature if you can. Sit for a few minutes then feel your pulse. Does it feel clearer, more balanced or nicer to feel? If so, that walk was just right for you.
