OUTLINE OF NAMA 2018 CONFERENCE PRESENTERS Guidelines and APPROVED TOPICS THEME: Ayurveda: Ayurveda for a Healthy World (Tagline) Global, sustainable and holistic medicine for a new age Topic Areas: Creating Shifts in modern Diseases and Global Approaches to Ayurvedic Education and Practice When writing your proposal, consider some of the following questions: What is Ayurveda s place in the global healthcare scene? How might Ayurveda help to direct the future path of healthcare? How can Ayurveda move our healthcare system from one of treating illness to one of supporting health? How does Ayurveda respond to emerging health crises and modern health conditions? How might you advance the role of Ayurvedic Research? How might you use Ayurvedic research to support your work with clients? What innovations in the practice of Ayurveda are catching attention around the world? Target Audience: The NAMA conference attendees are typically well versed in Ayurvedic basics. They primarily range from students in Ayurvedic programs to recent graduates and new practitioners, to well established and advanced practitioners. Ayurvedic Continuing Education should be deep enough for advanced practitioners. Presentations should be geared to provide information to professionals and students of Ayurveda who are educated in the basic concepts and precepts of Ayurveda. Please assure that your presentation is geared to a higher and deeper level of information. Basics needed for context should be limited and/or provided in handouts. Please plan to develop your presentation with the inclusion of handouts. Handouts should serve as an outline to assist attendees in following your presentation and/or taking notes. All presentation materials shall be provided to NAMA prior to the conference so that NAMA can upload documents to the website for the attendees use. In the effort of
conserving resources, NAMA will not be provided by printed materials for your presentation. There are two types of presentations for this conference: Panel Presentation: There are 6 panel sessions at 1.5 hours each. Themes for the panels are listed below. There will be a panel facilitator and 3-4 seats. Each panelist will get 5 minutes in the first round and then follow up with Q&A at the end. We are looking for panelists that have an expertise and clinical or research experience in the panel topic. 1. Autism Spectrum Disorder: An Ayurvedic Breakthrough: The Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) from an allopathic view is a neurodevelopmental disorder occurring in children (age of onset 12 to 18 months) that have no apparent cause. It is associated with distinct social and behavioral traits and is treated by attempts at behavior modification using and management of an often occurring functional bowel disorder. Interestingly ASD is reported by the CDC to affect approximately 1 in children, a rising statistic that has increased in recent years. Due to the age of onset and it s socially debilitating consequences it has far reaching consequences for disruption of family functioning. From an Ayurvedic perspective management of this vruddhi Vata Pitta majja dhatu disorder with anna vaha sroto dushthi in children is not usually amenable to adult Ayurvedic therapies. However, ASD is amenable to transdermal herbal marmani therapy, transmucosal herbs, and healing of the gut microbiome. The energy science evaluation of this imbalance and case reports will be discussed. This discussion also has importance in the role of management of inflammation in the neurodegenerative disease in general 2. Panchakarma and Its Modern Day Application: Panchakarma has a special place in the Ayurvedic approach in treatment protocol. Due to the complexities inherent in the application of panchakarma and limitations, we may have in different countries, it has become an area of not only controversy but an opportunity for the Ayurvedic community to explore together in preserving the integrity and efficacy of the crown jewel of Ayurveda while adapting it to modern society. This session will explore different approaches and overcome these challenges. 3. Ayurveda and GIT Disorders: Modern times have seen a dramatic increase in suffering from a variety of gastrointestinal disorders and undesirable gut symptoms. A fast-paced, stress-filled life and a rapidly changing, globally influenced food supply are contributing to this epidemic. People are left to sort through ever-changing information, advice, and trends about what, when, and how to eat and not eat. Now more than ever, we need to call upon the wisdom of Ayurveda and its vast knowledge base on the central role of the digestive system and all things food. 4. Autoimmune Disorders and Ayurveda: The rapid increase in number and prevalence of autoimmune disorders is a global health concern today. The symptomatic and reductive approach to modern medical systems finds these
disorders non-curable and focuses on immune suppression which leads to many other serious health issues and complications. The self-destructive nature of autoimmune diseases reflects both the dushana swabhava and panic response of patient s physiologic principles and defense mechanisms. Ayurvedic protocols, through its holistic approach, bring balance in body s functional systems and also enhance the immune stability and resistance against further relapse of the same pathological responses. This panel discussion will be focusing on understanding the samprapti of autoimmune disorders from the Ayurvedic perspective and principles of their management for sustainable outcomes with some clinical case studies 5. Modern Ayurvedic Practice Around the Globe There has been increasing awareness about Ayurveda amongst globally, and Ayurveda is being practiced in different ways in different regions and countries. Since Ayurveda is the longest and continuously practiced field of medicine, in other words, it is a living science, and hence it is but natural that it has to evolve with changing times. Thus the practice of Ayurved is being modified according to local and regional cultural, social and legal environments in different parts of the world. The aim of this panel is to create awareness within the Ayurvedic community regarding the challenges and solutions to safe Ayurvedic practices worldwide. Single Presentations: There are (3) 1.5-hour single presenter slots and presenters may also be assigned to one of the panels as appropriate to topic. Clinical Management - one session These sessions will focus on the clinical practice of Ayurveda. Included in this topic are patient/client management and compliance and lifestyle topics. These sessions should be geared primarily to practitioners and advanced students. Some topic ideas may include: Chronic Pain Management The role of Ayurveda in the Face of Emerging Epidemics The importance of digestion for health The role of Ayurveda in Treating/Managing Chronic Health Conditions such as High Cholesterol, Diabetes, Obesity, Cardiac issues, etc. Musculoskeletal Diseases Treating Sleep Disorders An Integrative Approach to Mental Health Pediatric Medicine and the use of Ayurveda From the Moment of Birth The Role of Ayurveda during the Post-Partum Period The Use of Ayurvedic Wisdom and Practices During the Menopausal Cycle
Geriatric Medicine and the use of Ayurveda in the Vata years An Ayurvedic Approach to Hospice Care, Death/Dying and Grief Research - one session This session will focus on the role of research as a way to advance understanding of the teachings of Ayurveda and furthering the growth of this science in our western world. Included in this track will be research completed by the presenter or a thorough evaluation of research specific to one topic. These sessions should be geared primarily to practitioners. o Current Ayurvedic Research o Developing collaborative research protocols o Reading and interpreting research studies o Whole system research o Outcome studies research o Modern Ayurvedic research related to a clinical condition Sister Sciences - one session This session should focus on the use of sister sciences to enhance the practice of Ayurveda. Presenters should connect these allied sciences to patient care, adjunct therapies and the creation of a healing care giving environment. This session is geared toward all attendees regardless of background and experience. o The use of Jyotish to support health o Integrating Yoga into your Ayurvedic Practice o PranayamaMeditation o Mantra and vibrational healing o Mudra o Ayurveda Yoga Therapy o The inclusion of Marma in a yoga practice PRESENTATION SELECTION: A rigorous evaluation of all submissions will be made using defined guidelines by multiple reviewers. There are approximately 9 general session presentation slots available including the panel presentations. We typically receive more submissions than there are sessions available for presenting. Therefore, not everyone who submits a proposal will be invited to present. When each submission is received, it is first reviewed for completeness as required in the application, so please provide all information requested in the format required to be considered and to expedite the review process.
Selection of presentation is based on: The individual s expertise in and knowledge of the topic for which he/she is applying to present Relevance to the year s theme and approved topics The speaker s presentation skills and ability to communicate effectively to large groups. A review of background, education, preparation and materials submitted as requested in the format defined online. Contribution to a well-balanced program. Consideration is also given for NAMA membership and previous attendance at NAMA Conferences when not presenting. Members of NAMA s Board of Director are not considered as presenters unless they are the primary or sole holder of specific and key information that will serve the conference. Deadline for Presentation Submissions: July 31, 2017 Submissions received after July will not be considered. Presenter selection will begin on August 1, 2017 and final selection will be completed by August 31 st 2017 It is the intention of NAMA to create relevant and motivational conferences each year. We look for educational information that is current and of interest to the conference attendees. There is a continuous effort to develop fresh and contemporary educational opportunities as well as maintaining the wisdom from the ancient and traditional sources of Ayurvedic knowledge. To create variety and interest, and allow for new ideas and new presenters, those who have presented in the prior conference may not be invited to present at this conference. If you are not asked to present, we still value you as a presenter and encourage you to apply to be considered for future events.
PRESENTER BENEFITS Presenters selected will be offered the following benefits. Benefits are per presentation. Multiple presenters for one presentation should take this into consideration when applying. One full conference pass including all 4 conference meals, any featured addresses, and all regular conference events are included. A signed agreement will be required for each invited presenter to clarify all arrangements between NAMA and the presenter. All submitters should be sure they understand the allowances that will be offered and by submitting agree to the limitations therein. COMPANION Should any presenter wish to be accompanied by a spouse or companion, your companion will be required to register and pay for the full conference (or events or meals in which he/she intends to participate) or companion of a presenter. If you are interested in being a presenter, please refer to the instructions and application online. It is designed to help you prepare and submit the documents needed in the correct format to expedite the processing of your application. We appreciate your interest, support, and participation and look forward to receiving your presentation submission. Thank you in advance, 2018 NAMA Conference Team: Dhaval Dhru, Hilary Garivaltis, Arya Hawkins, Bill Dean, Jayarajan Kodikannath, Raja Sivamani, Kathy Jo Staheli and Julie Wardwell
