2 MANIFESTATIONS OF SHEN All diseases are rooted in the shen-spirit. Chapter 8, Ling Shu (Huang Di) What is the shen-spirit? (Qi Bo) When qi and blood are complete and harmonized; when wei qi and ying qi are complete and unimpeded; when the 5 Zang are complete and evolved; then the shen-spirit resides in the Heart and Mind; the Hun and Po contain themselves within the Zang, and Humanity is complete. Concept of the Ling-Soul & Shen-Spirit Ling-Soul: as the physical & tangible embodiment of the shen-spirit & its satisfaction via the yin-material aspect, often associated with one s identity Shen-Spirit: as Sovereign ruler s directing/orchestrating force that controls the coordination (LR), organization (LU), maintenance (SP), and advisory (KI) aspect of the Zang-Fu its disturbance would reflect loss of control over one or more of these functions the Big Shen & Little Shen the Big Shen as the manifestation of life with its loss as death (Jing + Shen = Sui- Marrow and its Seat in the Nao-Brain) the Little Shen as the curriculum of this life that which one needs to graduate from the conquest (as reflected in the Heart) points on the head (e.g., Du-24 Shen Ting, GB-13 Ben Shen) and the chest (e.g., KI-23 Shen Feng, BL-44 Shen Tang) Disc 2 B. Cold cold stagnates the yin and blood to affect the shen commonly associated with severe loss of yang (often from the loss of yin) resulting in empty cold with of loss of expression/interaction/action (e.g., post-partum depression) 2

4 D. Qi Shang-Seven Injuries: The Emotions 1. Their Attributes gan-mood: the essential nature of human awareness that tunes us into the world that does not need a determinant/target qing-emotion: includes our affects, attitudes, and judgments toward a determinant object xing-temperament: our nature and overall personality 2. Types of Emotions a. yuan-source qi/biological: rooted in survival and adaptation (especially involving fear) b. ying-nourishing qi/reactive: rooted in response patterns from interactions with self and others c. shen/transcendental: the transcendence of the yi-mind/ego with no boundaries 3. Directionality qi ji/vectors of qi: to create physical/bodily symptoms or dispositions associated with the emotions 5 basic directions: ascending; descending; binding; scattering; suspending these vectors allow for expression, suppression, and repression of the emotions extreme or prolonged emotions affect sensory perception (qiao) of other possibilities developing into attitudes Disc 5 4. Social Paradigm/Construct emotions as value judgment rationality and self control that evolves to maintain survival of a groupand influenced by culture (values, norms, symbolism that guide and limit activity) emotions serving a social function that produce behavior influenced by morality where a certain felt-emotion may be construed as inappropriate based on laws/ religion (e.g., seven deadly sins) 5. Responsibility emotions are based on beliefs and these beliefs are cognitive allows for a discrimination of our inner lives though sometimes the naming of the emotions may be confused establishes the nature of our roles in social situation E. Respect Others Path the journey of life is not always a simple one as clinicians, we cannot necessarily predict the client s path we may see similarities between our clients and those who we have treated before, or with our own selves 4. Maintain Regularity in Connection with the Divine via meditation, a sense of being on your own time or space inviting silence the beginning of all possibilities live simply to fully live 5
