2 Long Term Chiropractic Patients Have Higher Blood Levels Of DNA Repair Chemicals The February 18, 2005 issue of the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research finds that patients under long-term chiropractic care have higher levels of the blood chemicals associated with effective DNA repair and overall wellness. The test was a retrospective analysis of 46 patients, all over the age of 40 who had been under short-term chiropractic care for 8-52 weeks or long-term chiropractic wellness care for weeks. Researchers assessed the levels of serum thiols, blood factors that have been found to help the body repair the damaging effects stress has on the structure of DNA. Serum thiols are measured in terms of nm cysteine. The authors found that non-chiropractic treated patients in the control group had serum thiol levels of 124 nm cysteine. Patients with active disease processes going on generally had levels below 90 compared to patients under long-term chiropractic care who had values of 146. In their conclusion, the authors say, some final observations should be noted. The results clearly support the recommendations being made for wellness care by chiropractors. In addition, it should be stated that these results occurred under normal practice conditions and indicate what most chiropractors are likely achieving when performing long-term care. Also, it refutes earlier views that five to seven years of care was necessary to optimize human health status, as indicated by serum thiol levels. Our sampling indicates that this can occur in a time frame approximately half that period. Finally, there is no doubt that chiropractic care was the dominant factor in being able to realize thiol values that in some cases have not been seen in nutriceutical testing, the only other intervention shown to improve thiol values. Long term chiropractic patients have higher blood levels of DNA repair chemicals. (2005). In Touch, 9, 1. TIC: What s Great in Chiropractic Aligned Continuing Education Program Page 1
3 Self-Reported Non Musculoskeletal Responses to Chiropractic Intervention: A Multination Survey Studied: Objective: to test nonmusculoskeltal responses to chiropractic intervention and to establish whether such responses are influenced by the country of study, the chiropractors attitudes and information to the patients, the patients demographic profiles and treatment regimens Study of 5607 adult patients throughout 7 countries currently under chiropractic care Chiropractic patients filled out questionnaires within 2 weeks of initiating chiropractic care The outcome measures included self reported, improved nonmusculoskeletal reactions These patients were under care for various spinal problems These patients reported other areas of body function improvements Results & Conclusions: Patients who began chiropractic care without any neuromusculoskeletal problems, reported the following body faculties as definitively better: Allergies 11% Breathing 27% Circulation 21% Digestions 26% Asthma 17% Hearing 13% Ringing in ears 19% Heart function 11% Long term chiropractic care increases long term health improvements. The longer the patients were under chiropractic care the more positive changes they experienced. Leboeuf-Yde C, Pedersen EN, Bryner P, et al. (2005). 4 Objective Physiologic Changes and Associated Health Benefits of Chiropractic Adjustments in Asymptomatic Subjects: A Literature Review Studied: Objective: To review literature documenting objectively measured physiologic changes and their associated health benefits subsequent to chiropractic adjustments, primarily in asymptomatic individuals. Literature review of more than 20 articles Study of patients without any symptoms. Patients started chiropractic care. Monitoring of various body systems for improved function. Results & Conclusions: The research revealed significant improvements in patient s respiration, ROM, HR variability, CV function, immune function, muscle strength, overall athletic ability once chiropractic care was initiated. Patients noted improvements in reaction time, information processing, visual acuity, stress and reproductive hormones, healing and recovery time, general health of senior citizens, reduced labor times of pregnant women following or during chiropractic care These initial findings document objectively measured physiologic changes and then associated health benefits in nearly every major system of the human body. It is plausible that chiropractic care may benefit every function of the body. Chiropractic adjustments affect the entire body Hannon, S. M. (2004). 5 Impact of Positive Sagittal Balance in Adult Spinal Deformity Studied: 752 adult patients Patient s systemic health status, measured Patient s x-rayed full spine and measurements marked from center of C7 by plumbline analysis Results & Conclusions: Increased pain and decreased function observed in patients as the amount of positive sagittal balance occurred. All measures of health status showed significantly poorer scores as C7 plumb line deviation increased Even minor forward head/body position was detrimental to a patient s overall health. 6 A Retrospective Assessment of Network Care using a Survey of Self Rated Health, Wellness and Quality of Life Health and Wellness Assessed and Chiropractic WINS Summary: Largest study ever conducted in history of chiropractic profession (2,818 patients and over 150 offices in 4 countries). Longest time period evaluated from 1 month to over 3 years. Benefits of chiropractic care were revealed as early as 1 month after beginning care. There was no indication of maximum clinical benefit. There were no plateaus in patient s progress. They continued to show improvements in their quality of life. Blanks et al. (1997). 7 Maintenance Care: Health Promotion Services Administered to US Chiropractic Patients aged 65 and Older, Part II Maintenance Care: WINS Patients 65 years and older who received maintenance chiropractic care for 5 years or longer were studied. These chiropractic patients under maintenance care spent only 31% of national average on health care services. They had 50% reduction in medical provider visits. They had better health habits, such as less use of cigarettes and prescription drugs. 95.8% of these maintenance patients believed their care to be either considerably or extremely valuable. 15 Japan seems to have benefited from recognizing that technology is wonderful, but just because you diagnose something with it, one should not be committed to undergoing treatment in the traditional paradigm. Their health statistics reflect this aspect of their philosophy as much of their treatment is not treatment at all, but loving care rendered in the home. Care, not treatment, is the answer. Drugs, surgery and hospitals are rarely the answer to chronic health problems. Facilitating the God-given healing capacity that all of us have is the key. Improving the diet, exercise, and lifestyle are basic. Effective interventions for the underlying emotional and spiritual wounding behind most chronic illness are also important clues to maximizing health and reducing disease. 21 Musculoskeletal Problems in the United States: is a leading cause of disability is the number #1 reason people visit their physician affects 1 in 3 Americans Musculoskeletal conditions cost our society an estimated $254 billion every year million Americans incur a musculoskeletal injury every year. Back or spine impairments, which number 18.4 million, are the most prevalent musculoskeletal conditions for persons age 18 and older. Each year, musculoskeletal conditions and injuries account for about million visits to physician s offices, 10.2 million hospital outpatient visits, and 25 million emergency department visits. 1 out of every 7 Americans reports a musculoskeletal impairment. More than half of all injuries are to the musculoskeletal system. More than 43 million people have some form of arthritis. It is estimated that the number of people affected by arthritis will increase to 60 million by out of every 2 women and 1 out of every 8 men older than age 50 will have an osteoporosis-related fracture in their lifetime. 23 Chiropractic Improves Brain Function The sixteenth annual upper cervical conference was held at Life University in Marietta, Georgia in November A study presented at the conference found that patients under chiropractic care experienced a measurable increase in brain function. Microcog is a computer administered and scored test that serves as a diagnostic tool to determine cognitive (brain) function. It measures activity in nine categories: attention/mental control, memory, reasoning/calculation, spatial processing, reaction time, information processing speed, information processing accuracy, general cognitive functioning and general cognitive proficiency. A total of 40 patients had their brain function measured by Microcog. 30 of these patients received upper cervical (neck) chiropractic adjustments and 10 served as a control group receiving no adjustments. Four weeks later, all 40 patients were tested by the Microcog system again. According to the study, significant improvements were observed in neurocognitive [brain] function in the group receiving upper cervical care. The control group did not demonstrate a similar trend. This study suggests that upper cervical chiropractic care may positively affect neurocognitive function. The World Health Organization defines health as 100% physical, mental and social well-being. A nervous system free of interference is vital to the full expression of all these aspects of your health potential. Chiropractic works to restore health by removing interference to your nervous system. Relevance to Patients: The Time is Now Aligned Continuing Education Program Page 1
24 More People Utilize And Are Satisfied With Chiropractors Research is showing that more and more people are using chiropractic to regain and maintain their health and they are very satisfied with the care they are receiving. Following is some recent research that supports this conclusion. According to the November / December 2001 issue of the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, patient satisfaction surveys show that people are very happy with their experience at their chiropractor s office; 83.3% rated their experience as excellent. An astounding 92.5% stated they would definitely recommend their chiropractor to others. The February 1, 2002 issue of Spine reports that the number of people utilizing the wellness disciplines for their health care has greatly increased. In 1990, 34% of Americans utilized wellness care from outside mainstream medical care. By 1997, this percentage increased to 42%. In 1997, chiropractic accounted for 31% of those visits. This represents a 100% increase in the number of people seeing chiropractors in the last 20 years. The May 1997 issue of the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics reports that patients positively endorsed all items on the satisfaction questionnaire, indicating a high level of satisfaction with the care they received. A study reported as far back as the January 1993 issue of the same journal concluded Patients expressed high levels of satisfaction with their doctors and the care they received. Although women were slightly more satisfied than men, other patient characteristics such as level of education, income, employment status or previous chiropractic care did not influence [patient s] response [to the surveys]. Commentary: Chiropractic care is being used by more and more people every day, is effective and everyone is very satisfied with it regardless of their social, educational or economic status. Share the word with your friends and family about the benefits you and your family have experienced under chiropractic care.
