The Emerging Interest in Complementary Healing and Spirituality Opportunities and Challenges: Spiritual Care C h a p l a i n K r i s t i e Z a h n A u g u s t 2 6,

Complementary Healing And Spiritual Care Vision Begin to foster equal respect for new and emerging modalities in spiritual care that can address and compliment traditional medicine; enable healing, inclusive of prevention and regard for the whole person. 3

Intention Clarify dimensions of Complementary Care: Understand the role of Spiritual Care Examine the influence of governing bodies on the regulation and ethics of Complementary care Explore select modalities of Complementary care that are successfully utilized within healthcare today Broaden your repertoire of spiritual care interventions that resonates with your faith tradition & ministry 4

Defining Complementary And Alternative Medicine Complementary Medicine Healing practices and products that work in conjunction with traditional medicine. For example, a cancer patient receiving chemotherapy may also undergo acupuncture to help manage chemo side effects like nausea and vomiting. 5

Alternative Medicine Not used as a complement to, but rather as a substitute for traditional therapy. An example would be a cancer patient who forgoes recommended chemotherapy and instead chooses to treat the disease with specific dietary changes. 6

Integrative Medicine Draws from both complementary medicine and alternative medicine and combines these with traditional Western therapies. 7

Difference Between Healing and Curing Curing : Restoration of health; an absence of symptoms; a remedy of disease. What physicians seek to offer you. 8

Difference Between Healing And Curing Healing : Restoration of wholeness that is new, different, and better, that transcends the physical to include mental, emotional, and spiritual vitality and wellness. Comes from within; what we bring to the table. Living in relationship to what is 9

Healing Takes Time: Challenges you to be a partner; to look within and change going forward. Work: Address the root causes. Healing May Be The Cure: Take your mind off fixing, and direct attention towards wholeness. 10

Complementary Care 1. Shifts focus from illness to Well Being, personal growth, transformation 2. Care for the whole person: Mind-Body-Spirit as three interacting elements that together result in health 3. Help individuals craft healthy relationships with their physical bodies, mental outlook, and emotional well being 4. Treats nutrition as medicine 5. Embraces the latest discoveries of neuroscience and mind-related health 6. Creates a partnership that joins the best of Western medicine with ancient healing traditions and complementary modalities 7. Values psychological and spiritual forces as food for the soul; feeling valued, having purpose, and finding meaning 11

Shifts In Patient Care The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM): information from more than 20,000 adults and nearly 10,000 children, found that about 40 percent of adults and 12 percent of children use some form of complementary and alternative medicine. Women, people ages 40 to 60, and adults with higher levels of education and income tended to use complementary and alternative therapies more frequently. Estimated $ spent per year in the USA on Complementary Care: $39 BILLION 12

Faith Daughter; thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace. -Mark 5: 25-34

Complementary MEDICINE: WHAT ARE THE CATEGORIES? 14

Mind-body medicine: Mind-body medicine includes treatments that focus on how our mental and emotional status interacts and affects the body's ability to function. Examples include Mindfulness, Meditation and various therapies expressed through art and music. Whole Medical Systems: This category refers to complete systems of medical theory and practice, many of which go back thousands of years and have roots in non-western cultures. Examples include Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda, a therapy that originated in India. Whole medical systems from the West include homeopathy and naturopathy. 15

Energy Medicine: This form of alternative medicine uses energy fields to promote healing. Biofield therapies affect energy fields that are said to encircle the human body forms include Reiki/ Healing Touch and qi gong, Bioelectromagnetic-based therapies, such as magnet therapy, involve the manipulation of electromagnetic fields Biologically Based Practices: The focus is on herbs, nutrition, and vitamins, dietary supplements and herbal medicine to replace or compliment pharmacology. 16

Ethical and Legal Issues of Complementary Care 1. Is the physician neglecting conventional care or creating undue alliance on spiritual care and malpractice? 2. Are important boundaries being crossed? (i.e touch) 3. Evidence based practice? 4. Advertising of services can be misleading, fraudulent? 5. Working within patients spiritual framework vs coercing the patient? 6. Explicit consent of patient receiving treatment? 17

Spirituality Belief in something bigger than self. Sense of interconnectedness to self, others, sacred. Seek and express meaning/purpose. Deepest values & meanings by which people live. Inner peace; search for the sacred. 18

Religion Religion is a cultural system of behaviors and practices, world views, sacred texts, holy places, ethics, and societal organization that relate humanity to what an anthropologist has called "an order of existence". 19

Spiritual, but Not Religious? Spirituality: Where do I personally find meaning, connection, value? Religion: What is true and right? 20

Either / Or vs. And / Both SPIRITUALITY OVERLAP RELIGION Where do I find meaning? Belief What practices, rites, rituals should I follow? How do I feel connected? Comfort What is right and wrong? How should I live? Reflection, Ethics, Awe What is true and false? 20

Spirituality and Emotional Health Spirituality and emotions are distinct but linked, deeply integrated with each other. 22

Spirituality and Emotional Health Spirituality: Seeking meaningful connection with something bigger than yourself, which can result in positive emotions, such as peace, awe, contentment, gratitude and acceptance. Emotional Health: Cultivating a positive state of mind, which can broaden your outlook to recognize and incorporate a connection to something larger than yourself. 23

Complementary Healing and Spirituality Embraces a clinical partnership with health care providers who offer care in MIND, BODY, and SPIRIT in pursuit of the patients optimal health. 24

Complementary Healing and Spirituality Not dependent solely on the "expert. Patients and Health Care providers embrace healing and wholeness with curiosity, emotional support, collaboration, humor and the ability to articulate options and alternatives without judgment. Multiple dimensions of what causes illness and possible healing beyond "pills or the knife". 25

He spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with clay. John 9:6-7 26

Spiritual Care Opportunities Bridge the cultural, political, social and demographic divide by becoming more intentional, inclusive, and aligned with healing and wholeness. Explore processes for cultivating resilience, for generating hope and courage, and for bringing healing to spiritual and emotional wounds. Profound respect for the "God" within Deepened sense of compassion and forgiveness. Heightened spiritual consciousness. Become a more integral member of interdisciplinary team to contribute to the healing and wellbeing of patients/ residents. 26

Challenges of Spiritual Care Naming shifting realities in spiritual care and creating a common language Soul" not as something to be redeemed, but as the essence of humanity The ability to measure, metric and value spiritual care contribution Reframe focus from illness to wellness; from cure to healing. Broaden the services of spiritual care beyond patient visits 28

Catholic Position in Media The truth, as taught by the Catholic Church: "Our wisdom does not save us, but the humility to surrender to God's grace as the source of salvation is essential for the Christian selftransformation. We are not saved by our own merits or our wisdom, but with God's assistance. In other words, self- transformation is impossible, but transformation by God's grace is possible." Online article: Catholic Culture.org 29

Council of Bishop s Report 2009 The Bishops of the Catholic Church state in no unclear terms in their document on Reiki published in 2009: Without justification from faith or natural science, a Catholic who puts his or her trust in Reiki would be operating in the realm of superstition, the no-mans-land that is neither faith, nor science, [Therefore], it would be inappropriate for Catholic institutions, such as Catholic health care facilities and retreat centers, or persons representing the church, such as chaplains, to promote or provide support for Reiki Therapy 30

Consideration For Spiritual Care: Modalities Mindfulness Meditation Aromatherapy Sound Therapy Healing Touch Other?

Consideration for Spiritual Care: Implementation How to initiate? How to spiritually assess? Outpatient vs Inpatient? Staff vs Patients/Residents? How to explore modalities further? What is our intention in today s discussion?

Key Messages 1. An Inclusive Spiritual/Pastoral Ministry needs to recognize shifts in perceptions and expectations for spiritual comfort. 2. The presence of Complementary/Integrative/Alternative Healing is a growing trend in health care/hospice/long term care. 3. Spirituality is a prominent, pivotal component of many complementary healing modalities. 4. Evidence based research affirms the value of spiritual care as an integrative, interdisciplinary contribution to wholeness and healing. 5. Chaplains are encouraged to be self- reflective and discerning with choices to explore and utilize complementary spiritual care for their personal ministry, aligned with their faith tradition. 6. Many involved forms of complementary spiritual care require study/ credentialing; chaplains need to be mindful to honor ethical liabilities and organizational/institutional boundaries, 30

Canticle of Brother Sun and Sister Moon of St. Francis Assisi Praised be You, my Lord, with all your creatures especially Sir Brother Sun, who is the day through whom You give us light, and he is beautiful and radiant with great splendour, of You Most High, he bears the likeness. Praised be You, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars, in the heavens you have made them bright, precious and fair. Praised be You, my Lord, through Brothers Wind and Air, and fair and stormy, all weather's moods, by which You cherish all that You have made. 35

Praised be You, my Lord, through Sister Water, so useful, humble, precious, and pure. Praised be You, my Lord, through Brother Fire, through whom You light the night and he is beautiful and playful and robust and strong. Praised be You, my Lord, through our Sister Mother Earth, who sustains and governs us, producing varied fruits with coloured flowers and herbs. Praise be You, my Lord, through those who grant pardon for love of You and bear sickness and trial. Blessed are those who endure in peace, by You, Most High, they will be crowned 36
