3 Connective Tissue Function/Definition: Bind, support, protect, fill spaces, store fat, produce blood cells Location: Widely distributed throughout body Distinguishing Characteristics: Mostly have good blood supply; cells are farther apart than epithelial cells

4 Extracellular Matrix Composed of protein fibers, and a ground substance consisting of non-fibrous proteins and other molecules, and fluids. Connective tissues have an abundance of extracellular matrix between them

5 Loose Connective Tissue Function/Definition: A type of connective tissue that holds organs and epithelia in place, and has a variety or proteinaceous fibers, including collagen and elastin. Includes areolar tissue, adipose tissue, and reticular connective tissue Location: Surrounds the blood vessels and nerves Distinguishing Characteristics: Cells are loosely separated in the rich extracellular matrix. Named after its weave appearance.

6 Dense Connective Tissue Function/Definition: Consists of many closely packed, thick, collagenous fibers and a fine network of elastic fibers. Location: Parts of tendons and ligaments, binds muscle to bone and bone to bone. Also in the protective white layer of the eyeball and in the deeper skin layers Distinguishing Characteristics: Few cells, most of which are fibroblasts. Little blood supply, so tissue repair is slow

7 Skeletal Muscle Tissue Function/Definition: Skeletal muscles can generally be contracted and relaxed at will to perform voluntary functions, such as movement. They also control activities such as urination, and defecation. Skeletal muscles are also considered crucial to some involuntary functions, like breathing. Location: Skeletal muscles are generally to be found attached to the skeleton, usually by tendons. Distinguishing Characteristics: Skeletal muscles are considered striated, meaning one can find alternating bands of dark and light crossing the width of the muscle fibers.

8 Smooth Muscle Tissue Function/Definition: Muscle tissue that contracts without conscious control, having the form of thin layers or sheets made up of spindle-shaped, unstriated cells with single nuclei Location: Found in the walls of the internal organs, such as the stomach, intestine, bladder, and blood vessels, excluding the heart. Distinguishing Characteristics: consisting of nonstriated, spindleshaped cells.

9 Cardiac Muscle Tissue Function/Definition: Cardiac muscle tissue is a highly specialized type of muscle found only in the walls of the heart. This muscle type has a number of unique properties that allow it to regularly contract in order to force the heart to beat. Location: Heart Distinguishing Characteristics: It has a striated appearance and the cells can have more than one nucleus. Not under voluntary control. The contractions of the cardiac muscles are mediated by specialized pacemaker cells

10 Cartilage Function/Definition: Rigid connective tissue that provides support, frameworks, and attachments, protects underlying tissues, and forms structural models for many developing bones. Location: Ends of bones in many joints, soft part of nose, supporting rings of the respiratory passages, external ears, parts of larynx, spinal column, knees, and pelvic girdle Distinguishing Characteristics: Lack of direct blood supply to cartilage tissue is why torn cartilage heals slowly

11 Bone Function/Definition: Most rigid connective tissue. Internally supports body structures, protects vital parts in the cranial and thoracic cavities, and is an attachment for muscles. Location: Inner structure of body Distinguishing Characteristics: It s hardness is largely due to mineral salts, such as calcium phosphate and calcium carbonate, between cells.

12 Blood Function/Definition: Transports a variety of materials between interior body cells and those that exchange substances with the external environment. Helps maintain stable internal environmental conditions. Location: All throughout body. Most blood cells form in red marrow within the hollow parts of certain long bones Distinguishing Characteristics: Blood is composed of formed elements suspended in a fluid extracellular matrix called blood plasma. The formed elements include red blood cells, white blood cells, and cell fragments called platelets.
