Contrast and compare the potential benefits and risks of small molecule inhibitors for arthritis with newly available and established biological therapies. 3. Describe the mechanisms of actions and current and potential future utility of existing and novel therapies for systemic lupus erythematosus and related connective tissue disease. 4. Discuss how to recognize spondyloarthritis, explain treatment approaches, and describe the effects of nonbiological and biological DMARDs. 5. List potential pitfalls evaluating and treating osteoporosis in patients with underlying rheumatic disease. 6. Explain the risks and benefits of established and novel therapies to treat primary osteoporosis, describe an algorithm for initiating therapy, and monitoring its efficacy and describe conditions under which therapy should be altered or terminated. Target audience This comprehensive review is directed to rheumatologists, primary care physicians, pain management specialists and other interested physicians, nurses and allied health care professionals.
