4 Arthritis Foundation The Arthritis Foundation is the largest national nonprofit organization solely dedicated to the prevention, control and cure of arthritis, the nation s leading cause of disability.
5 Arthritis Foundation Today arthritis strikes 50 million Americans that s one in every five adults. Two-thirds of people with arthritis are under the age of 65, including 300,000 children Every year, arthritis results in more than 40 million outpatient visits, roughly a million hospitalizations and over 9,000 deaths.

8 Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program Recreational, warm water program Combines buoyancy of water and the soothing warmth of a heated pool Exercises designed to increase flexibility, muscle strength, balance and stamina Approved aquatic equipment optional Ongoing or time-limited, 2-3 times/week
9 Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program Pain 18% Function (activities of daily living) 25% ROM and hip and knee flexibility Muscle Strength QOL & Well-being Aerobic fitness
10 Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program ROM, strengthening, low-impact endurance/ aerobic and balance activities, relaxation, health education Can be geared to ANY age, type, level of severity 2-3 times/wk, 8 weeks or ongoing series Equipment optional Activities seated, standing or lying down

12 Walk With Ease Designed for people with arthritis and other chronic conditions Available in English and Spanish Focuses on motivational strategies (action plans, goal setting, social support) Can be done by individuals (self-directed) or groups led by a trained leader 6-week program
13 Walk With Ease Group Model Group format led by a trained leader Classes begin with a 5-minute mini lecturette Script and posters help guide health education section Six-week program (3 sessions per week for about minutes)
14 Walk With Ease Self-Directed Model Individuals use guidebook and set own pace Encouraged to read guidebook, exercise, and build up to walking at least 30 minutes on 5 or more days a week for 6 weeks Contacted by Arthritis Foundation (AF) local office or partner orgranization

18 Tai Chi Developed by Dr. Paul Lam Sun style of Tai Chi Program includes warm-up and cooldown exercises, breathing techniques, and safety guidelines
19 Tai Chi Designed for people with arthritis but anyone can enjoy the benefits! 6 basic and 6 advanced movements are taught forwards and backwards Instructor-led program Group meets 2-3 times per week for 1 hour
20 Tai Chi Tai Chi studies have shown the following results in participants: Decreased Pain Improved Movement Reduced Falls Improved Balance Improved Strength Improved Flexibility

22 Online workshops for people with chronic conditions Nearly half of all adults live with a chronic condition such as arthritis or diabetes. Our online workshops teach them self-management tips. In partnership with the Arthritis foundation, NCOA have disseminated interactive online workshops that build the knowledge, skills and confidence to self-manage arthritis. Thanks to the support and funding granted from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention the arthritis workshops are offered nationwide, free of charge. A non-profit service and advocacy organization 2011 National Council on Aging 22
23 Better Choices, Better Health for Arthritis Online workshops in a nutshell: each class is comprised of a small group of up to 25 people participants are encouraged to commit to a total of about two hours per week for six weeks to complete the program; share stories, strategies and struggles the workshop is anonymous facilitators have chronic conditions themselves, like arthritis free workbook, the Arthritis Helpbook, to provide support as you go through the workshop. 24 Better Choices, Better Health for Arthritis Cont. workshop will cover a variety of topics, including: Pain management Problem-solving steps Dealing with difficult emotions Fitness and healthy eating Fatigue and energy conservation Working with your health care team Communicating with your family, friends and doctors and more. Better Choices, Better Health for Arthritis can help people live better. In fact, the program has been proven to: reduce pain ease fear, frustration and worry about your arthritis decrease activity limitations improve your ability and confidence to manage the arthritis A non-profit service and advocacy organization 2011 National Council on Aging 24

To date, we have offered over 20 workshops; and the Arthritis Foundation has met grant year one deliverables; we are in the process of delivering workshops under year 2. Marketing of the Program: Year One: o Built a microsite o Created marketing materials to promote the program on a national level. o Saw a great response rate showing high demand for the program from consumers. o Year One had an overwhelming success: exceeding the required number of program completers by 22%. Year Two: o Continue to test new creative and marketing outlets on a national level. o Leverage Arthritis Foundation local offices and NCOA offices/service points and state health departments to promote the program for added reach and program sustainability A non-profit service and advocacy organization 2011 National Council on Aging 26
