3 Sources used International open access portals/databases : BASE - one of the world's most voluminous search engines, especially for academic open access web resources operated by Bielefeld University Library, OpenAIRE is an OA publications infrastructure, making visible funded research outcomes (currently 13,333,000 publications + 16,730 datasets from 697 data providers), OAIster is a catalog of millions of records representing open access digital resources, DOAJ, The Directory of Open Access Journals was launched in 2003 at Lund University, Sweden, with 300 open access journals, SERPA/RoMEO and SERPA/JULIET are part of SHERPA Services based at the University of Nottingham. International commercial database: Scopus, the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature,

5 Funding of open access (scientific journals and repositories) Government funding: The major funders of Open Access initiatives (journals and repositories) in all 28 EU countries are governments with their governmental bodies: ministries, agencies, foundations, funds EU funding: 22 countries have declared EU funding Although 6 countries (Bulgaria, Estonia, Luxemburg, Malta, Poland and Slovakia) have not declared EU funding of OA activities (through FPs, Horizon2020 projects, ESFs etc.), EU funding exists. Academic institutions funding: In 12 countries (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania and Slovakia) universities, academies, institutes, research associations funding OA activities Private and charity funders : Private funders participating in funding OA activities in Germany and Sweden; charity funders in United Kingdom APC (Article Proceesing Charges): 20% of OA peer review journals covered by DOAJ database (N=1545) from EU28 countries declare APCs
