7 4] Explain the movement in the following organisms: The snail moves with the help of a muscular organ known as the FOOT. It makes wave like movements by expanding and contracting the muscles in the foot. It also secrete a slimy substance known as the MUCOUS that enables the snail to move with ease.
8 The body of a fish is specially designed for swimming that is they have a STREAMLINED body. This shape allows water to move easily around the body and offers least resistance to its flow. They also swim with the help of FINS which help them in balancing and changing the direction. It has a SAC like stracture called SWIM BLADDER filled with air and keeps the fish afloat. To move forward fishes move their tails from side to side and this zigzag movement pushes the water and propels the fish forward.
9 Birds have STREAMLINED body which makes it easy for them to move through air. The air can easily cut through the sides of the body and offers least resistant. They have HOLLOW bones which makes the body light weight and fit for flying. The body is covered with feathers which keep them warm while flying at height. The chest muscles are very strong which enable bird to flap their wings by flying.
10 5] Write four functions of skeletal system 1) Support: It forms the framework of our body, provides shape and support, and holds the body upright. 2) Movement: It helps in the movement of various parts of the body. 3) Protection: It protects the internal organs of our body. The skull protects the brain, ribs protect the heart and lungs and so on 4) Formation of blood cells: Bones are filled with a spongy mass from inside called the bone marrow where blood cells are formed.
11 6] Explain the following : 1] RIB CAGE: The rib cage consists of 12 pairs of bones which are flat, thin and curved. These bones are joined with the backbone at the back and with breast bone in the front. The last two pairs of ribs are not attached in front and hence called Floating ribs. The rib cage protects organs such as heart and lungs and parts of stomach and kidneys.
12 2) Backbone or Spine: The backbone or spine runs from the base of the skull to the lower base and forms the central supporting rod for the skeleton. It is made up of 33 small bones called vertebrae which are joined to each other. This help us to bend and twist our back. It protects the spinal cord.
13 7) Explain about the following movable joints in the body. Hinge joint Hinge joints allow movement in only two directions backward and forward or upward and downward. Joints present in our knee elbow. The finger joints.
14 Ball and socket joint In such a joint, the end of one bone is like a ball. It fits perfectly into a cavity (socket) in the other bone. This placement allows maximum movement in all directions. Joint present between arm and shoulder.
15 7) Why are the last two pairs of ribs known as floating ribs? - The last two pairs of ribs are not attached in front / breast bone are hence called floating ribs. 8) What changes happens to the muscles when we bend them and straighten our arms? - When we bend our arms the muscles on the upper sides [biceps] contract to pull the bones up. At the same time the muscles of lower sides [triceps]relax. When the arms are straight again, biceps relax and triceps contract.
