Anytime someone walks into the office of Physical Therapy & Sports Injury Center or calls PTSIC on the phone, you will find a smiling face and someone willing to assist in any way she can. Since 2012, Gretchen Hersh is that smiling face. Gretchen is a native of York, graduating from William Penn High School. Her husband, Allen, is employed at P.H. Glatfelter. They live in the Thomasville area. In her free time, Gretchen enjoys cooking, baking and spending time with her family. Gretchen s three children and 10 grandchildren give her ample opportunity to cook and bake with them. One of her favorite meals is crab cakes, baked potato, salad and a good cup of coffee, especially sharing any or all of it with a loved one. Prior to Physical Therapy & Sports Injury Center, Gretchen worked in customer service in the banking and the healthcare industries. She uses her depth of experience to provide topnotch customer service to all our clients, colleagues and partners as many of you have seen for yourselves. Continued on pg 5 1

2 Amy and PTSIC are Boston Strong together Congratulations, Amy Sipe! Amy completed the 2017 Boston Marathon on April 17, Just a few weeks earlier, Amy finished up her physical therapy treatment to be able to participate in the race. She writes thank you so much, Holly, for helping me to get Boston Strong. UPDATE: Holly, I ran the York Marathon Sunday morning (May 14) and finished with another Boston Qualifying time for I was 6 th female overall and 2 nd female in my age group. Thank you so much for your exceptional PT care, for believing in me, and your continued encouragement and support. Featured recipe Rogers s pudding fruit salad Dorothea T. Ingredients: 2-(20 oz.) cans of Dole pineapple chunks (in juice) 2-(15 oz.) cans Mandarin oranges 1- jar maraschino cherries (no stems) 1-(4.6 oz.) box of Jell-O cook & serve vanilla pudding 1- (3 oz.) box Jell-O tapioca cook & serve pudding Three ripe bananas 60 seedless grapes red or green or 30 of each. Instructions: Drain juice from both cans of pineapple and 1 can of mandarin oranges into a large sauce pan. Drain most of the juice away from second can of oranges and add what is left in can to sauce pan. Instructions cont. Heat juice in pan. When it is warm stir in the pudding mixes. Cook on medium heat until the mixture reaches a boil. Stir frequently so mixture does not stick. Let mixture cool. When the mixture is cool, transfer to a large bowl. Add drain pineapple, oranges and grapes. Mix together. Drain the cherries. Cut them in half and add gently to mixture. Add sliced bananas. Make sure bananas are below the surface so they won't turn brown. Refrigerate until ready to serve. Enjoy 2

3 Q: I woke up with pain in my foot 3 days ago. And it hasn t gone away. Can Physical Therapy help me? This is a common question And one we hear from a lot of people. Before we answer this for you take this Simple Test we will call it the Foot Pain Audit. And it will give us the answer if PT can help you or not Part 1: The Stand and walk in the morning Test After waking, stand up and walk 3 feet. When you bear weight, does it hurt on the bottom of your foot or heel? Does your pain go away as the day goes on? Is your pain worse in the morning after you wake up or are they the same all of the time? If you felt pain, soreness or stiffness standing up in the morning, then write it down here: Part 2: The YES Toe pull test Sit in a chair keeping good posture. Cross your painful foot over the opposite leg (like you are sitting like a man) pull your big toe back toward your ankle as far as you can Repeat with the other toe. Did you have any pain, soreness or stiffness in one toe more than the other? If so, then write it down here note what you felt and what movement it was with. (For example, My right toe was stiff and could not go back as far as my left one. ) Your answer: Part 3: The Plantar Fascia tenderness test : Sit in a chair keeping good posture. Cross the painful foot over the opposite leg. Press your fingers into the arch of the painful foot, repeat on the opposite side. Was one side more tender than the other? Write down what you felt here: 3

4 Plantar Fasciitis Now that the test is done let s take a look at this. A really simple rule we use in PT is: If the Pain is Reproducible then it s Reducible. This means that if one of these movements made your foot pain, soreness or stiffness worse Then there s a good chance we can help you in Physical Therapy. So Here s What to Do Next: If you want to get rid of that foot pain so it doesn t bother you when you wake up or so you can walk without it foot pain or so you can take a walk outside without causing more damage. And we will be able to help you better, get rid of your foot pain and stiffness naturally. Give a call today. Plantar Fasciitis : Is one of the most common causes of heel pain. It involves inflammation of a thick band of tissue that runs across the bottom of your foot and connects your heel bone to your toes (plantar fascia). Plantar fasciitis commonly causes stabbing pain that usually occurs with your first steps in the morning. As you get up and move more, the pain normally decreases, but it might return after long periods of standing or after rising from sitting. Plantar fasciitis is more common in runners. In addition, people who are overweight and those who wear shoes with inadequate support have an increased risk of plantar fasciitis. 5 Front & center continued... Gretchen summed up her mentality by saying, people are important and I like helping them. She believes great customer service means helping clients efficiently and always in a friendly manner. At PTSIC, Gretchen is responsible for scheduling, authorizing insurance benefits, greeting clients on arrival, handling calls and all the tasks relating to managing our front desk. We enjoy having Gretchen work with us and appreciate everything she does for our clients, all with a smile and servant s heart. PTSIC: We are Family Our last newsletter mentioned PTSIC s history of having treated many members of the same family over the years. We thought it would be fun to highlight some of the examples. One of the most common examples throughout PTSIC s service has been treating married couples. One such couple is Mildred & Arlington Art Kahley. Mildred recalled recently that as a first grade teacher she would have to schedule her appointments with PTSIC at 6 AM to ensure she could make it to class on time. Mildred retired in 1994 so our relationship with her goes back quite a few years. During that time, Art was also a patient. Mildred and Art were never our patients at the same time, but at 94 years old, we can tell you that Art is keeping up good physical health. Many younger patients remark on Art s great shape when he s in the office. Linda and Ron Horner are another example of a married couple who have received treatment at PTSIC the only difference being that Linda and Ron have attended PTSIC at the same time. Linda and Ron have not been patients as long as the Kahleys but honestly, who has? Prior to her retirement following a career as a Certified Nurse Practitioner, Linda referred her patients to PTSIC for treatment. We were honored when one of our trusted partners turned patient and we were able to serve Linda. Married couples like Linda and Ron often find it convenient to schedule physical therapy appointments together. We like to tell them that couples who pray together, stay together and couples who exercise together, stay stronger together. Sometimes Ron will finish first and then we usually find him making coffee or examining a piece of equipment until Linda is ready to go. If you see Ron or Linda in the office, say hi. 5
