4 Ventilator Associated Pneumonia Vap Ventilator-associated pneumonia is a lung infection that develops in a person who is on a ventilator. A ventilator is a machine that is used to help a patient breathe by giving oxygen through a tube placed in a patient s mouth or nose, or through a hole in the front of the neck. Ventilator-associated Pneumonia (VAP) HAI CDC Ventilator-associated pneumonia is a type of lung infection that occurs in people who are on mechanical ventilation breathing machines in hospitals. As such, VAP typically affects critically ill persons that are in an intensive care unit (ICU). VAP is a major source of increased illness and death. Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is defined as pneumonia in a patient intubated and ventilated at the time of or within 48 hours before the onset of the event. (There is no minimum period of time that the ventilator must be in place in order for the pneumonia to be considered ventilator-associated.) The VAP rate is defined as the number of ventilator-associated pneumonias per 1, Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia (VAP) Rate per 1, Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) in a critically ill patient significantly increases risk of mortality and, at a minimum, increases ventilator time, length of stay, and cost of care. Many hospitals have achieved significant reductions in VAP rates by implementing the IHI Ventilator Bundle, along with teamwork and communication strategies such as structured multidisciplinary rounds and...
