3 Three Key Areas The NES Autism Training Framework describes 3 Key Areas relevant to Health and Social Care settings: Identification, Screening, Assessment & Diagnosis Management, Support & Intervention Autism across the Lifespan: Transitions & Changes The Autism Informed Practice Level : all health and social care staff The Autism Skilled Practice Level : all staff who have direct and/or frequent contact or a high impact role The Autism Enhanced Practice Level : staff who have more regular or intense contact role focuses specifically on autism provides specific interventions for autism manages the care or service for individuals on the spectrum The Expertise In Autism Practice Level : highly specialist knowledge and skills health and social care staff in specialist role in the care, management and support of people on the spectrum and their carers

8 The NES Autism Training Plan The Training Plan will outline the training that is needed to fulfil the requirements of the NHS Education for Scotland Autism Training Framework by (i) identifying currently available training; (ii) identifying gaps in training provision, and, where appropriate, (iii) guiding the commissioning or development of appropriate training.

11 Autism Knowledge and Skills (AKS): Self-Assessment and Training Action Plan The (AKS) Self-Assessment and Training Action Plan has been designed to assist individual staff members or service managers to record training needs when using the NES Autism Training Framework: Optimising Outcomes and the NES Autism Training Plan. To use the Self Assessment sheet:- o Familiarise yourself with the 3 areas and the 4 levels in the NES Autism Training Framework (pp.12-15) o Familiarise yourself with the training considerations in the NES Autism Training Plan (pp.10-11) o o o o Begin with Identification, Screening, Assessment & Diagnosis (pp ). Identify the level for yourself or your team (for managers) Go to the relevant page and look through the tables identified for your level. Consider the information in the Knowledge and Skills columns. How confident do you feel in relation to the core knowledge and skills required at your level? Now repeat for: Management, Support & Intervention (pp ) and Autism across the lifespan: transitions and change (pp.74-75) Complete the AKS-Self-Assessment. 12 The AKS-Training Action Plan sheet has been designed to assist individual staff members or service managers to identify specific training needs and to consider how these might be addressed. Service managers may also wish to use the plan for teams or groups of staff that they manage. o Consider the areas you identified in the self- assessment as needing more confidence o What are the gaps in your Knowledge and Skills? o Look at the summary table for your level, e.g. for Identification, Screening, Assessment and Diagnosis p 39 in the Training Framework and pp in the Training Plan, and consider the core elements of training that you might need and what you might need to consider when identifying suitable training. o Complete the AKS-Training Action Plan and review as necessary.
