the way they are touched by others the way their bodies feel to them (sensory) what your family believes is okay and not okay to do the words that family members use (and don t use) to refer to parts of the body watching the relationships around them observing male/female roles watching television listening to music talking with their friends Social development leads to appropriate sexual development Physical Growth Sexual Growth Social Development 2
Social judgment Decision making skills/everyday memory problems/planning Emotional regulation Difficulty with social cues and interactions-- which is the root of most inappropriate behaviors Cognitively, the world is perceived differently Not able to read non-verbal cues accurately Delay in self-awareness Poor planning Unaware of consequences of behaviors Lack of choice making skills 3
Children with autism may develop later or earlier due to their disability or medical condition--- BUT THEY STILL DEVELOP!!! Prepare children for changes to their body it may be confusing or upsetting Teach skills and routines to promote hygiene Use multiple teaching strategies Be prepared to answer questions Be clear and specific about the information you want to share Break big tasks (e.g. personal care during menstruation) into small steps -- task analysis Provide practice for your children DON T WAIT TO TEACH UNTIL THE BEHAVIOR HAS OCCURRED! Start Early Teach body parts with correct terms (hips, breasts, penis, testicles, pubic area) REMEMBER They will hear slang terms too! Identify similarities and differences Consider using anatomically correct dolls, a skeleton, anatomically correct pictures, books 4
Common social mistakes on part of person with a disability Public-private errors Sexual self-stimulation Saying something inappropriate in public Stranger-friend errors Hugging or kissing a stranger Being overly familiar with an acquaintance Both types of mistakes can put people with disabilities at risk for sexual exploitation or breaking the law perpetrators Teaching behaviors appropriate to the public & private place encourages responsible social and sexual behavior Many inappropriate actions and activities reflect confusion, lack of awareness and limited judgment Many social problems indicate a limited understanding about public and private places, private parts of the anatomy and public and private behaviors. Discouraged from public engaging in activities such as: Exposing private parts of the anatomy by undressing, pulling down or lifting up clothing Scratching or touching genitals Fixing or adjusting underclothing Self-stimulation House Rules Clothing (or not) Touching (rules, when and where) Private areas of the house Public areas (community, school) Rules about other s privacy 5
Develop a routine Video modeling Checklist Don t forget DEODORANT, face cleaner, and clean clothes Hygiene around menstrual cycle 6
Knowing the difference of these categories of people Social Skills targeting each type of encounter What to say What to do Circles (Adapted) 7
