2 Inverclyde Plans In November 2011 the Scottish strategy for autism was published. Inverclyde Plans Review of services consult with stakeholders People with autism Their families/carers Staff who support them Develop Local strategy Develop action plan to improve outcomes for people with autism

4 About Inverclyde Approximately 800 people live in Inverclyde with autism Including 480 with high functioning autism or Asperger's syndrome (60%) Prevalence rate is 1:100 (Scottish Strategy) 40% have Learning disability (320) In 2002, Skylark centre opened and 20 children were known to have a diagnosis of autism In 2012, 53 diagnostic assessments were carried out by the Skylark centre (0-18 years) 55% (30) received a diagnosis of autism or Asperger's By August 2013, 204 children have a confirmed diagnosis Suggests that the majority of children are now being picked up by the paediatric diagnostic process
5 Adults in Inverclyde Autism in the adult population is under-diagnosed Absence of a robust diagnostic service when they were at school Local Authority collates data on adults with learning disability and autism who have used their services in last 3 years Most recent statistics identify 43 adults with learning disability who have a diagnosis of autism (CLDT esay)
6 Who was consulted People with autism Their families and carers Organisations that provide services for them statutory services health, education, social work. Voluntary groups and social enterprises Inverclyde Autistic Support Group, REACH for Autism, Inverclyde carers Centre. Third sector service providers Quarriers, Turning point, Barnardo s, Enable. Mainstream services to gauge what they knew about autism and how accessible are their services for a person with autism.
7 Questionnaires Focus groups 1:1 interviews Methods of consultation Above undertaken by health, education, social work and previously mentioned support groups. Information put on Inverclyde Council website and Solus Screens in Health settings
8 Background to Strategy Launch Event March launch of the Draft Inverclyde Autism Strategy Agree to hold an event for a range of stakeholders with an interest in the development and implementation of the Strategy. May Working group established which incorporated families and young people with autism working alongside staff from Inverclyde CHCP and other partner agencies including West College Scotland and REACH for Autism. This group were to develop a co-production approach to addressing the challenges of autism in Inverclyde.
9 Planning for the Event Young people with autism must be a central part of the event Innovative approaches needed a compare with a difference to hold the interest of everyone comedienne Quiet area if the event gets too much for people I WANT TO SPEAK I want to speak cards for everyone Clear Programme Varied format to include young people speaking about their experiences and aspirations, workshops on the themes from the strategy, discussion and question panel
10 Workshop Themes & Key Issues The Themes from the Strategy were discussed in workshops from which action points were recorded. The following is a list of the workshop topics: Understood, Valued and Safe Housing & Independent Living Employment Health & Wellbeing Social Networks Education Included & Involved Pathway for Diagnosis Independence & Support Information & Advice Training Plan
11 Presentations/Speakers Presentations were delivered by: Ilse Ogston Speech and Language Therapist from the Skylark Children s Services who spoke about the pathways for diagnosis for children. Margaret McGowan Parent director from REACH for Autism who shared the experience of their organisation s success in gaining the support and involvement of the local community. Jim O Donnell clinical Autism specialist who spoke about pathways for adult diagnosis and follow up support.

REACH for Autism: - young people with Autism, carers, family members. Education services: - Stella Maris, All Saints, Craigmarloch, psychology Emergency Service: - Police, Fire, Ambulance, Prison. Enterprise Childcare: - staff, parents, carers. Inverclyde Autism Support Group:- parents & carers Enable Scotland:-staff, service users & Families West College Scotland Employability service:- staff, students, carers. Skylark Children s service CAMHS Community Learning & Development Quarriers Disability Employment Advisor-Job Centre plus Skills Development Scotland Economic & Social regeneration Inverclyde Local Councillors Phoenix Community Health Project Inverclyde Community Development Trust Volunteer Centre Clinical Autism Specialist Barnardo s service Your Voice Inverclyde Advocacy Parklea Association branching Out The Richmond Fellowship Autism Network Scotland National strategy Coordination team Inverclyde Council On Disability Key Housing Turning Point Scotland Inverclyde Carers Centre
13 Going Forward Planning group reconvened to evaluate the event and to put together recommendations to Service Manager for taking forward the strategy in Inverclyde. This involved:- 1 Setting up a steering group to ensure a coproduction approach to implementing the strategy. (parents/carers, people with autism, service providers). 2 Piloting a Thematic approach to implementing the strategy by focussing on 2 key areas to begin with. These areas would be Employment and Included & Involved
14 Inverclyde Autism Strategy The response from mainstream services was very low but did give an insight into the progress that still has to made to make their services accessible to a person with autism Strategy report and action plan have been put together on the basis of the information supplied by the people who engaged in the consultation process We are confident that the people who engaged will play an important role in the successful implementation of the strategy Consultation and co-production methods used in developing the strategy have led to a fuller picture of the current services in Inverclyde
