8 # Support Group For Parents of Adults and Soon to be Adults (Volusia) 3/14/2016 at 6:30 PM This meeting is for parents/caretakers only, not the adults themselves. If you are looking for activities for aduts with ASD in Volusia and the adult is independent enough to go to an event without you, make sure he/she knows about the ASPIRE outings in Volusia! Link to register: # Behavior Basics II (Orange) 3/15/2016 at 11:00 AM This presentation (Part 2) will review participants Part 1 home assignment, and present how to look at problem behaviors from a functional, behavioral perspective using principles of ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis). Videos demonstrating behaviors will be shown for learning how to identify functions of behaviors. The concepts of functional assessment and strategies for reducing and replacing behavior will be discussed. Unfortunately, childcare is NOT available at this presentation. Link to register: # What Parents Need to Know about Transportation (E.Orange/Seminole) 3/17/2016 at 6:30 PM Participants will learn how to ensure that the IEP addresses the prerequisite skills needed for transportation. The presenter will review how to address transportation goals through the Transition IEP and also how to teach transportation skills. Lastly, participants will briefly learn how to use different transportation options in the Orlando area. This presentation is best suited for parents who have children who are between years of age. Link to register: # Survivor: Middle School Island (Orange) 3/23/2016 at 6:30 PM Direct bullying seems to increase through the elementary years, peak in the middle school/junior high school years, and decline during the high school years. This Training will present educators, students, and parents with personal insights into the experiences of adolescents with Asperger Syndrome and provide strategies to support all adolescents with developmental disabilities. Link to register: # Executive Functioning and ASD (Volusia) 3/24/2016 at 6:30 PM Looking at one of the core deficits of High functioning Autism, this training will focus on how to organize the disorganized child. Executive Functioning is the ability to plan, organize and complete tasks that require sustained attention and effort. 10 # IEP Series Part II: Nuts & Bolts of the IEP (Orange) 3/24/2016 at 6:30 PM This training will teach parents how to create appropriate, measurable, functional IEP benchmarks and objectives. Participants are urged to bring the child s current IEP or IFSP, as well as a list of outcomes they would like to see on their child s next IEP. Unfortunately, we will not be able to provide childcare at this training. Link to register: # Behavior Basics 1 (Osceola) 3/25/2016 at 12:30 PM This presentation is primarily geared towards children ages 2-12, verbal or not, and covers the techniques of preventing negative or problem behaviors, teaching and increasing positive behaviors, such as following directions, self-help and independence skills, using the principles of ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis). Behavior strategies such as redirection, reinforcement, and positives will be covered. Participants will complete a home assignment to be discussed at Part 2 session. This is a great opportunity to meet our coordinator who is serving Oviedo and parts of East Orange County. They will learn to think in terms of solutions and be motivated to seek strategies and concepts that lead to results aiding their teen, reducing frustration and anxiety. 11 # ABA Strategies for The Home (Volusia) 4/04/2016 at 6:30 PM An intensive parent training class for parents new to autism or applied behavior analysis. This course will explain the fundamentals of behavioral principles and how they can be applied to the home situation to build new skills, prevent behavior problems and replace existing problems. Unfortunately, we will not be able to provide childcare at this training. Link to register: #1709 Support Group for Adults of Siblings with ASD (E.Orange/Seminole) 4/05/2016 at 6:30 PM This is a support group for adults of siblings with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Adults will meet and socialize with others who have siblings with autism. They will share stories, form a support group, gain new friendships, and have fun! This presentation will go over strategies to increase homework completion and also make your child more independent at the same time! Caregivers will learn about the different reasons why children have a difficult time completing their homework, what to rule out first when making a homework plan for your child, and specific strategies that you can tailor to your child s needs. Link to register: NEW! # Teaching Self-Initiation Strategies to Improve Communication and Social Skills (E.Orange/Seminole) 4/14/2016 at 6:30 PM In order for children with autism to improve their language and connect with others socially, they must be able to self-initiate. Parents will learn how to teach their children how to ask questions, comment, and make a request in order to socially interact with others and gain information about their surroundings. This presentation is based on Pivotal Response Training. Please note that this training is appropriate for parents of children who have some verbal ability (I.e., children who can make requests for their wants and needs, but do not ask questions or comment on their environment).
