5 What Is CARD? Center for Autism and Related Disabilities State funded program through the legislature All services are free of charge

6 Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) Developmental Disability: A disorder that is present from birth or very early in development. Occurs in 1 of every 68 children (CDC, 2013) 4:1 more common in boys than girls Significant increase in number of individuals diagnosed with ASD over the last 2 decades.

7 Core Diagnostic Deficits of ASD Qualitative impairment in social interaction Qualitative impairment in communication Restricted interests and repetitive behaviors (RRB s)

8 Autism Basics It is characterized by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors. ASD can occur with intellectual disability difficulties in motor coordination attention and physical health issues such as sleep and gastrointestinal disturbances mental health issues

9 Prevalence Autism is diagnosed in 1/68 children today Why are we seeing this increase? Changes in diagnostic criteria Media providing information Better educated diagnosticians More children meeting criteria

10 Genetic and environmental factors are being studied Parent behavior does NOT cause ASD There is no medication for ASD, although certain medications can be recommended to address co-morbid conditions such as extreme difficulty attending, anxiety, depression, aggression, OCD There is no known cure for ASD The effects range from mild to severe

11 Communication Characteristics Limited or lack of speech development possible Jargon Limited development of gestures Abnormalities in rhythm, volume, and pitch Immediate echolalia Delayed echolalia Preservative speech,incessant questioning

12 Social Interaction Actively disliking social contact with others Understanding other people s feelings Making sense of the rules in social situations Knowing what to do before acting Being able to predict the behavior of others Impulsivity Being able to form and keep friendships and other close relationships

13 Repetitive Behaviors Common repetitive behaviors: Hand-flapping Rocking Jumping Twirling Arranging and rearranging objects Repeating sounds, words, or phrases

14 Restricted Repertoire of Activities and Interests Narrow Interests Repetitive adherence to topic of interest Exclusion of other activities Rote collection of objects or facts of interests Repetitive Routines On self On others Insistence on sameness Preoccupation with parts of objects

19 What Is CARD s Mission? CARD s mission is to enhance the lives of individuals we serve by helping them become valued members of their communities. Expand capacity of systems without duplicating services Family system School districts Other agencies Community

20 What does CARD do? Our services are family-driven FSU CARD has a small team of professionals serving many children and adults Our goal is to help build capacity such that individuals learn skills and strategies to help themselves and/or their children.

21 What does CARD do? Support and guidance following initial diagnosis Referral to services and support groups in the community Information and training Lending library Assistance with developing visual supports Short-term consultation related to appropriate supports in the home, school or community Consultation via or telephone Website and quarterly newsletter

22 Eligibility CARD serves all children and adults that have documentation of either a qualifying autism spectrum disorder, a dual-sensory impairment, a vision or hearing loss alongside other disabling conditions, or genetic disorders that may co-exist with autism symptoms (e.g. Rett s disorder, Fragile X). For children under the age of 6 without a diagnosis, we have a process for making them eligible as they seek evaluation and diagnosis. Qualifying documentation: doctor s evaluation, school evaluation, IEP, IFSP

23 FSU CARD Basic Statistics Over 3000 active constituents Eighteen counties served through 3 offices

24 Panama City Office Serves Bay, Gulf, Washington, Holmes counties. Provides support services for Pensacola office, which include Walton, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa, and Escambia counties. Over 1000 constituents in all counties served.

30 NEW CLASS Required There will be a new VPK standards course required for any lead instructor with less than an AS degree beginning with the FY VPK program year. 38 SR Contracting Process Currently, providers can begin to migrate their profile to Review each tab for accuracy. The profile documents should move forward to the next year as long as they are not expired. Providers are required to annually submit: W9 SunBiz screenshot Private Rate Statement You will have until April 30 th to review and update your profile. 50 ASQ Process Family comes into to determine eligibility for School Readiness services. Front desks ask if parent would like to complete the ASQ screener on their child. Yes No Parent completes ASQ and returns it to the eligibility specialist. ASQ review process begins. Parent completes OEL SR24 declining the screeningscreening specialist attaches OEL-SR24 to Child Record. EARLY LEARNING COALITION OF NORTHWEST FLORIDA

51 ASQ Review Process Eligibility/Screening Specialist reviews ASQ If concerns or scores in the gray or dark gray are noted the Eligibility/Screening Specialist reviews area of concern with family. if a referral is needed the Eligibility/Screening Specialist will either help send the referral to either Early Steps or Child find or give the paper work for the parent to make the referral call.
