2 15 th Annual 5K Run/Walk fr Autism May 27, 2017 Fr ver 25 years, the Autism Sciety Central Virginia, a 501(c)(3) nnprfit, has served as the regin s premier surce f educatin, advcacy, services, and supprt fr individuals with autism, their families and friends, and interested prfessinals. Autism is a develpmental disability that ccurs in all racial, ethnic, and sciecnmic grups. Many individuals with autism have significant scial, cmmunicatin, and behaviral challenges. The prevalence rate f autism cntinues t rise, and currently, the Centers fr Disease Cntrl and Preventin (CDC, 2016) estimates that an average f 1 in 68 children (1 in 42 bys) in the United States has autism. There is n knwn cause r cure fr autism at this time. The Autism Sciety Central VA is cmmitted t meaningful participatin and self-determinatin in all aspects f life fr individuals with autism and their families, at any age and any stage. T fulfill ur missin t imprve the lives f all affected by autism by maximizing the self- sufficiency, independence, and quality f life fr all living with autism, the Autism Sciety Central Virginia ffers... Free mnthly wrkshps and chapter meetings featuring expert speakers Free child/teen care at mnthly meetings Special interest grups t meet the diverse needs f individuals with autism and their families Infrmatin and referral services thrugh ur website, r by phne r A mnthly newsletter t ver 600 prfessinals, families, and interested individuals Weekly blasts with imprtant events and reminders t a list f ver 4000 individuals and grups Advcacy and legislative effrts n behalf f the autism cmmunity Schlarships fr scial/recreatinal prgrams fr children, yuth, and adults with ASD Mnthly scial and recreatinal pprtunities fr individuals with ASD and their families, including Leg/game clubs, bwling, Teen Scial Club, and a prgram fr siblings Outreach activities, including but nt limited t a Spring Family Picnic, Summer Pl Party, Park Outings, Winter Hliday Event, and tickets t Special events like ballgames and shws Over the past fifteen years, the Autism Sciety Central Virginia 5k Run/Walk has grwn frm a small venture t an annual event that attracted ver 1500 participants in Held at the Innsbrk Pavilin, this family-friendly event includes entertainment, fd, exhibitrs, and a Kid s Fun Zne. The 5K Run/Walk is ne f the Autism Sciety Central Virginia's primary surces f incme, raising ver $100,000 in May All funds raised frm this event prvide much needed supprt fr individuals with autism and their families in Central Virginia.
