1 Glenelg Talks Event - Super Brain Train Maggie Flanagan Join us for a special Glenelg Talks event with Wellness and Nutrition coach and qualified trainer Maggie Flanagan. Super Brain Train is an educational workshop, which focuses on a holistic-health approach to our daily routines, to incorporate best practice for a brain-protective lifestyle. This two-hour course incorporates a practical approach to dementia prevention delivered in an interactive hands-on style. Notes and reading lists will be provided to participants. 6 About Professor Tony Attwood Tony is a clinical psychologist who has specialised in autism spectrum disorders since he qualified as a clinical psychologist in England in He currently works in his own private practice, and is also adjunct professor at Griffith University, Queensland and senior consultant at the Minds and Hearts clinic in Brisbane. His book Asperger s Syndrome A Guide for Parents and Professionals has sold over 350,000 copies and has been translated into over 25 languages. His subsequent book, The Complete Guide to Asperger s Syndrome, was published in October 2006 and is one of the primary textbooks on Asperger s syndrome. He has several subsequent books published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers, Future Horizons Inc. and Guilford Press. Tony has been invited to be a keynote speaker at many Australasian and International Conferences. He presents workshops and runs training courses for parents, professionals and individuals with Asperger's syndrome all over the world and is a prolific author of scientific papers and books on the subject. He has worked with many thousands of individuals of all ages with Asperger's syndrome or an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Seminars 4.30pm 5pm 7pm 9.30am 10am THURSDAY 30 MARCH 2017 Registrations and Afternoon Tea The Diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder and Asperger s Syndrome (suitable for professionals, carers and families) The diagnostic criteria for autism and Asperger's syndrome are explained with an emphasis on the advantages and disadvantages of the way a diagnosis is currently made. The presentation is of value to practitioners by including a script and protocol to use in a diagnostic assessment. The diagnostic procedures are applicable to children, teenagers and adults and include a DVD recording of a diagnostic assessment of a ten-year-old child with Asperger's syndrome. The presentation also includes the latest theories with regard to the origins of Asperger's syndrome and autism. Close FRIDAY 31 MARCH 2017 Registrations Cognitive Abilities: A Different Way of Thinking and Learning Profile The unusual profile of cognitive abilities associated with Asperger s syndrome is described with an emphasis on the profile of intellectual abilities, problems with executive function, attention and weak central coherence. Strategies are described to improve attention, organisational skills and academic achievement. 12 pm LUNCH 12.45pm Peter Lewis Disability Support Worker Awards 1pm Managing Challenging Behaviour in Children, Adolescents & Adults with Autism The presentation focuses on children, adolescents and adults with classic autism and provides an explanation and strategies with regard to repetitive behaviour, emotion management and the development of effective communication systems for emotions. The application of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy to children with severe autism is discussed and how it can be applied to such individuals.
