Autism Home Support Services: Balancing In-Home Services and School Consulting Johnna Conley Marrea Winnega September 25, 2014 Overview Autism Home Support Services Applied Behavior Analysis Programming Consultation Generalization and Collaboration 1

Autism Home Support Services Services provided by AHSS School Consulting Skill Development Behavioral Support Psychological Services 2

Obtaining Services from AHSS Call (844) AHSS ABA and speak with Caroline Family Support will contact the parent Parent submits appropriate forms BCBA will meet with parent for an assessment Kickoff meeting Sessions begin How AHSS Works Family Support Team Client Services Team Clinical Team Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBA) Care Team Members (CTM) Operations Team 3

AHSS Approach Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Changing socially significant behavior using positive reinforcement Making changes based on data Basing interventions on function Applied Behavior Analysis Behavioral Science Single-subject research Board Certified Behavior Analysts Specialized training Follow a Code of Conduct 4

Applied Behavior Analysis Positive Reinforcement Increasing behavior By presenting something AFTER a behavior occurs Increases the likelihood of the behavior occurring in the future Applied Behavior Analysis Other terms Pairing Shaping Errorless Teaching Chaining Discrete Trial Teaching Differential Reinforcement Extinction Token Economies Contingency Contracts Functional Behavior Assessment 5

Applied Behavior Analysis Interventions based on function Escape from demand Access to preferred items Attention Sensory stimulation Programming Overall goal is to increase independence and socially appropriate behaviors while decreasing inappropriate behaviors Takes a functional approach using Skinner s verbal operants Mands, Tacts, Intraverbals, Audience, Thinking Use criterion-referenced assessments VB-Mapp, ABLLS-R, AFLS 6

Programming Incorporate parent requests and goals from school and other therapists Network of BCBAs to collaborate with for specific skills Feeding problems Potty Training Sleep issues Create social groups when feasible Consultation Our focus is to support teachers and staff by: Identifying necessary supports for students Providing suggestions to further increase functional skills Training when requested We realize teachers and staff are in it and don t always have time to simply observe We are often considered an extra pair of eyes in the classroom 7

Consultation Work with entire team Director of Special Education, Principals, SLPs, OTs Most focus is placed on: Classroom organization and management Proactive (antecedent) manipulations Embedding ABA/Verbal Behavior in classrooms Brainstorming ways to replace problem behaviors and increase social and communication skills Generalization and Collaboration Generalization: being able to perform a behavior in a variety of contexts or with a variety of people Plan for generalization by: using multiple examples varying instructions practicing in different environments practicing with different people 8

Generalization and Collaboration In order for some skills to be generalized, collaboration must take place Collaboration is also needed when students need excessive practice to reach goals students emit inappropriate behaviors in one setting and not another skills can only be assessed in one setting Generalization and Collaboration BCBAs supervising in-home programs contact teachers and other providers to: perform classroom observations ensure consistency of behavior plans ask about what skills need additional practice share goals that have been reached 9

Review How AHSS works What ABA really is Programming for in-home programs Our School Consultation model Why Collaboration is important THANK YOU! Contact us: Autismhomesupport.com Johnna Conley: Marrea Winnega: 10
