Over 700 people come to the European Parliament of Persons with Disabilities On the 6 December 2017 the European Parliament of Persons with Disabilities took place in Brussels. People came from all over Europe to take part. The European Parliament of Persons with Disabilities is a big meeting in the European Parliament building. 4
The meeting happened in a room called the Hemicycle. The Hemicycle is the main room of the Parliament. It is where politicians usually come to vote. A politician is a person who makes and votes on laws. 5
People choose politicians by voting. This time most of the people in the room were not all politicians. This time they were people with disabilities and people from disability organisations. More than 700 people from many European countries came to the event. 6
Just like politicians, the people in the Hemicycle could speak and listen to others. They could talk about their thoughts and experiences. People from the European Parliament and the European Commission were there to listen to them. People at the event talked about a few subjects in particular. 7
They talked about how to make sure people with disabilities can vote in elections. They talked about how to encourage people with disabilities to become politicians. They also talked about the plan the EU should have for the future to make life better for people with disabilities. Finally they talked about how to support people with disabilities in developing countries. 8
A developing country is a country that is not yet very rich. In these countries life can be very difficult for people with disabilities. The staff and some members from Autism-Europe were at the event. Autism-Europe s President and Vice-President both gave a short speech. 9
Autism-Europe s President is Zsuzsanna Szilvasy. She is from Hungary. She is the mother with an autistic son. She explained that we must do more to include autistic people in society. 10
She also said that countries must implement the laws to support people with disabilities. This means that European countries need to make sure everyone follows these laws. This means the laws must really make people s lives better. Autism-Europe s Vice-President is Pietro Cirrincione. 11
He is from Italy. He is autistic. Pietro explained that in lots of countries it is difficult to get an autism diagnosis. He explained that this should be made easier. An autism diagnosis is when a doctor or other health person says that someone is autistic. 12
Having a diagnosis means you can show other people that you are autistic. This way an autistic person can ask for support. Pietro also said that autistic people should have more say when companies make medicine for autistic people. 13
People with disabilities meet in Brussels The 4 and 5 December 2017 were the European Days of Persons with Disabilities. On these days the European Commission and the European Disability Forum organised a big conference. A conference is when lots of people come together to talk about a particular subject. 14
At this conference people with disabilities talked about their experiences. Decision makers also talked at the conference. Decision makers are people who help make new laws. They talked about what we can do to make the lives of people with disabilities better. 15
The conference happened in the city of Brussels, in Belgium. At the conference people talked about many different subjects. They talked about making sure people with disabilities can vote in elections. They talked about supporting people with disabilities who want to become politicians. 16
They talked about making cities in Europe more accessible. And they talked about how to make sure everyone respects the rights of people with disabilities. Lots of people came to the conference. Staff and members from Autism-Europe were there. 17
The Vice-President of Autism-Europe spoke at the conference. The name of the Vice-President is Pietro Cirrincione. He is from Italy. He is autistic. 18
He said that voting in elections is difficult for some autistic people. The way politicians speak is hard for autistic people to understand. This is because many politicians do not say clearly what they mean. When people ask politicians questions, they do not give a clear answer. 19
He said that many autistic people need information in clear and simple language. This way they can decide who to vote for. 20
Event takes place about supporting autistic people to find work On the 4 December 2017 an event took place at the Council of the European Union (EU). The event was about supporting autistic people to find work. Autism-Europe helped organise the event with the Council of the EU. 21
The Council of the EU is the place where decision makers from EU countries meet and decide on new laws. But decision-makers are not the only people who work there. There are many employees in the Council of the EU. These employees assist the decision-makers. 22
The event was for people working in the Council of the EU, the European Commission and the European Parliament. We call these places the EU Institutions. They are the places where EU laws are made. The aim of the event was to show how to support autistic people to find work in the EU Institutions. 23
Two speakers came to talk to the people at the event. The first speaker was Kristýna Rungeová. She works for a company called SAP that works with computer technology. SAP has a special programme to hire people with autism. 24
This is because they know many people with autism can be very good at their jobs. Sometimes autistic people just need extra support to pass the job interview. Sometimes autistic people need support to keep their job and to feel relaxed at work. Kristýna gave the people at the event advice. 25
She explained how they can help autistic people get jobs in the EU institutions. The second speaker was Johan Cappaert. Johan is autistic. Johan works at the European Parliament. 26
He works with computers. He explained to people at the event how it can feel to be autistic. He explained what things can be difficult for autistic people at work. He also explained some of the things autistic people can do very well. 27
On the same day Autism-Europe had a meeting with the people in charge of hiring new workers for the EU institutions. Autism-Europe talked with them about how to get more autistic people to work in the EU institutions. Autism-Europe explained how to support autistic people. Autism-Europe explained how to allow autistic people to show their true talents. 28
