Shane, PhD Director of Boston Children s Hospital, Monarch Center for Autism Kara Smith, CF-SLP Speech-Language Pathologist, Monarch Center for Autism Melissa Baker, MS, CCC-SLP Director, Speech-Language Pathology, Monarch Center for Autism Tracks: Communication/Social Skills, Educators/Clinicians, Technology ABSTRACT: This seminar describes a new evaluation strategy for determining the value of using scene cues (dynamic or static) to improve the comprehension of persons with moderate to severe autism. The assessment procedure compares a person s comprehension of directives given through spoken language alone to comprehension when spoken language is accompanied by a scene cue. We will demonstrate through video samples changes in comprehension when such cues are introduced. OBJECTIVES: 1. Participants will be able to define scene verses element cues. 2. Participants will be able to assess comprehension improvement with the use of scene cues. 3. 2 Howard C. Shane, PhD is the Director of the Center for Communication Enhancement at Boston Children s Hospital and the Director of the Children s Hospital Monarch School for Autism Collaboration. He is an Associate Professor of Otolaryngology at Harvard Medical School and a Fellow of ASHA as well as the recipient of ASHA s Honors of the Association. Dr. Shane has produced numerous papers and chapters on severe speech impairment, autism, and many communication disorders. Kara Smith, CF-SLP is a speech-language pathologist at Monarch Center for Autism. She graduated cum laude on a graduate assistantship scholarship in 2011 with a Master s degree from Ithaca College. Afterwards, she traveled to Quito, Ecuador to volunteer in speech pathology programs there. Since she has returned, she has been working to build a specialty in assistive technology, utilizing ipads, Vizzle, SMART Boards, speech generating devices, and more. Melissa Baker, MS CCC-SLP is a speech-language pathologist with 15 years of experience in the field of autism. She has worked in both public and private school settings in both Massachusetts and Ohio. Melissa has worked as a speech pathologist at Monarch Center for Autism in Shaker Heights, Ohio since February For the past six years, she has been the supervisor for the speech therapy department. In this role, she has presented at many state and national conferences and has been published in Autism Spectrum Quarterly and Advance for Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists. 426 milestones.org info@milestones.org
