Unit Information It is expected that before the unit is delivered, the tutor will have read the Qualification Specification to ensure all conditions regarding Rules of Combination, delivery, assessment and internal quality assurance are fulfilled. Additional guidance is available below as Assessment Guidance for Learning Outcomes and Assessment Criteria in bold. This unit has 4 learning outcomes 1. Understand for Explain how styles may differ when communicating with 1.2. Give examples of how an individual on the autistic spectrum may take language literally 1.3. Explain how expressive and receptive skills may vary for 1.4. Analyse the implications for practice of the link between behaviours and 1.5. Analyse how evidence based practice in communicating with individuals on the autistic spectrum could support own practice 1.6. Give an example of how adopting an individual s preferred method of can reinforce their identity and uniqueness 1 of 5
2 2. Be able to work in partnership with an individual on the autistic spectrum and others to develop a person centred plan 2.1. Assess the needs of from: (a) the individuals perspective (b) observation (c) others (d) wider networks (e) available supporting documents 2.2. Design a plan to support an individual on the autistic spectrum to consider: (a) using their own strengths (b) adopting their preferred methods (c) verbal techniques (d) non-verbal techniques (e) links between own behaviours and (f) addressing barriers to that may be personal to the individual (g) environmental adaptations that may be required of 5
3 3. Be able to implement a plan to communicate with individuals on the autistic spectrum 4. Be able to support others to communicate with an individual on the autistic spectrum 3.1. Implement a plan to support an individual on the autistic spectrum to consider: (a) using their own strengths (b) adopting their preferred methods (c) verbal techniques (d) non-verbal techniques (e) links between own behaviours and (f) addressing barriers to that may be personal to the individual (g) environmental adaptations that may be required 3.2. Adapt own preferred methods of to implement a plan with individuals on the autistic spectrum 3.3. Review methods used with the individual to check effective interaction 4.1. Support others to identify the preferred methods of an individual on the autistic spectrum 4.2. Support others to identify barriers specific to an individual on the autistic spectrum 4.3. Support others to uphold the perspective of individuals on the autistic spectrum in 4.4. Support others to adapt their usual methods to communicate with individuals on the autistic spectrum of 5
4 Assessment Guidance This unit must be assessed in accordance with Skills for Care and development QCF Assessment Principles. Learning Outcome 1 Individual: is someone accessing care or support. 1.2 Examples: a minimum of three to be given. Learning Outcome Others may include: families and carers colleges work colleagues of individuals own colleagues advocates colleagues other professionals wider networks. Wider networks may include: community links transport links employment education social.
