Sultan Qaboos University Hospital Medicines Information Course Assessment Overview. As the course is delivered at three levels; Basic (BL), Intermediate (IL) and Advanced (AL) there are also three levels of assessment. The assessment process will be fully explained to all participants (with examples) at the start of the course. Basic Level 1. All participants to complete the assessment test before and after the course (see below). 2. Provide a written search strategy for a medicines information category of their choice (e.g. ADR, drugs in pregnancy etc.). Include background questions and recommended information sources. Intermediate Level 1. All participants to complete the assessment test before and after the course. 2. As BL2 but to include a fully referenced written answer and details of a PubMed and internet search strategy. Participants should identify their own question to work on. Advanced Level 1. All participants to complete the assessment test before and after the course. 2. As IL2 3. A structured written critical appraisal of a clinical paper. Participants can bring their own papers to assess or examples will be provided. Feedback. For each group the collated results of the before and after assessment test will be provided at the end of each session. Statistical comparisons will be made. For BL2, IL2, AL2 and AL3 written comments and feedback will be provided by the tutor. Pass Mark Instead of a pass mark participants will be awarded Attainment of Competence at each level. There will be the opportunity to re-submit material if competence is not initially met. (Competence standards for each of the above will be forwarded subsequently)

Medicines Information Assessment Test Name of Participant Q1. (This question is to assess perceptions only and is not marked). On a scale of 1 to 5 (1 lowest; 5 highest rate your knowledge/skill level of the following; A. Searching the Internet B. Using medline (e.g. PubMed, Ovid) C. Information management (organizing your information electronically) D. Information retrieval balance (getting the required information quickly without too many irrelevant results) E. Writing answers to medicines information questions Q2. (This question is to assess perceptions only and is not marked). On a scale of 1 to 5 (1 lowest; 5 highest rate your knowledge/skill level of the following; A. Critical Appraisal of clinical papers B. Critical Appraisal of drug advertisements C. Relative risk and Number Needed to Treat D p values and Confidence intervals E. Meta-analysis

Q3. Name two general text books which are useful when answering medicines information questions. Q4. Name a resource (book or web site) which is useful for answering questions about drug interactions. Q5. Name a resource (book or web site) which is useful for answering questions about the safety of drugs in pregnancy. Q6. Name a resource (book or web site) which is useful for answering questions about the compatibility of parenteral drugs and IV fluids. Q7. What information source would you use first when answering a question about an adverse reaction or side effects caused by a drug?

Q8. List 4 important background questions required when answering a question about suspected drug induced liver toxicity. Q9. Write down your search strategy for a search looking for information on the safety of clozapine during pregnancy. Include details of a PubMed search also. Q.10 A study demonstrates that clarithromycin has a greater MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration) in the respiratory epithelium than erythromycin. The authors conclude that this should make clarithromycin a better choice for patients with bacterial respiratory infections to susceptible organisms. This study is a good example of a: A POEM (Patient Orientated Evidence that Matters) B DOE (Disease Orientated Evidence that Matters) C Evidence based practice D Consensus agreement

Q.11 Patients with acute MI receiving Clotbustase have a 9% mortality rate at 3 months, compared with a 10% mortality rate for Streptokinase. The relative risk reduction is: A 1% B 9% C 10% D 90% Q.12 Patients with acute MI receiving Clotbustase have a 9% mortality rate at 3 months, compared with a 10% mortality rate for Streptokinase. The absolute risk reduction is: A 1% B 9% C 10% D 90% Q.13 Which of the following provides the lowest level of evidence? A. Case report B. Case series C. Case control study D. Cohort study Q.14 A trial shows that drug A reduces adverse events compared with drug B (p = 0.05) The RR is 0.75 (95% CI ) A. The results show clear patient benefits from drug A B. The results are inconclusive C. A p value of 0.01 would be more meaningful D. A and B are similar in their clinical effects and further trials would be a waste of time and money.

Q.15 Explain the difference between and Odds Ratio (OR) and Relative Risk. Q.16 List three ways to make search results more specific (improve precision) Q.17 List three ways to make search results more sensitive (improve recall) Q.18 The event rate with the active drug (A) is 10 in 10,000 and in the control group (C) the event rate is 20 in 10, 000. a. What is the relative risk reduction?

b. Calculate the NNT Q.19 Give one example of the following; A. Just in Case information. B. Just in Time information Q. 20 List (and explain if necessary) five factors to consider when evaluating the quality of information on an internet web site.
