Two examples would be my investigations which highlighted the nature and extent of the problems with intentional self-poisoning with, first, paracetamol and, secondly co-proxamol. This work critically contributed to decisions on legislation to introduce smaller packs of paracetamol, and, to withdraw co-proxamol in the UK (an initiative which has been extended to the whole of the EU). Both initiatives have resulted in major public health benefits, including reduced numbers of deaths. I have a great deal of experience of government and other policy committees.i have for example, been a member of several Department of Health, Public Health England and Royal College of Psychiatrists committees.i helped plan the National Suicide Prevention Strategy for England (2002), and sit on the Strategy Advisory Group. I am also a member of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Suicide Prevention and the Royal College Working Party on Risk. I have considerable experience of conveying research findings to the public through the media, which 13/11/17 European Union, Page 1 / 13

2 leads to dissemination of my research and its implications to the public. Finally, I have experience of providing expert advice on sensitive and controversial issues, as evidenced by his being invited to provide expert psychiatric advice to the Hutton Inquiry in relation to the death of the UK weapons Inspector, Dr David Kelly.
