2 Neurotransmitters in human and animals Catecholamines and neurotransmitters play essential roles in both humans and animals. They are involved in a wide range of physiological and patho-physiological conditions. Because of the extraction step at the beginning of the catecholamine assays, researchers are able to use materials from many types of animal species, as well as tissue homogenates and cell cultures supernatants. The chemical structure of the catecholamines is identical in all animals. 4 Measurement of urinary individual metanephrines Recent publications show urinary normetanephrine and metanephrine excretion as a sensitive test for diagnosis of pheochromocytoma. However, such high clinical sensitivity can be achieved only through individual measurements for each of these substances, and not simply through the total amount. Circulating serotonin is metabolized to 5-hydroxyindole acetic acid (5-HIAA), which is excreted in urine. IBL offers kits for both substances in ELISA format. Serotonin ELISA in research The IBL serotonin ELISA has been successfully used in research studies of various kinds. The assay requires a small sample volume of 20 µl only, and has been used with mice, rat brain tissue, ringdoves, fish serum and tissue, rabbits, cell cultures supernatants and bronchoalveolar lavage fluids. 5 Melatonin and 6-Sulfatoxymelatonin (Melatoninsulfate) Melatonin is an endogen hormone produced by the pineal gland located in the human brain. Daylight results in a considerably lower plasma melatonin level, but at night the pineal gland increases its melatonin secretion. IBL offers ELISA and RIA kits for reliable measurement of melatonin concentrations in serum, plasma and saliva. Melatonin is subsequently metabolized to 6-sulfatoxymelatonin, which is excreted in urine. Recent studies with IBL s 6-sulfatoxymelatonin ELISA have shown that the 6-sulfatoxymelatonin concentration is age and time dependent (cf. 6 Melatonin ELISA for research The IBL melatonin ELISA has been used successfully in a wide range of melatonin research areas, including various plants and diets, such as beer, sunflower sprouts, red wine and olive oil. Melatonin ELISA has also been used successfully to measure melatonin in the pineal glands of deep-sea fish, extrapineal rat tissues and mouse tissue.
