2 Ending the Criminalization of Mental Illness Keynote Speaker Judge Steven Leifman Judge Steven Leifman is Associate Administrative Judge of the Miami-Dade County Court Criminal Division. He chairs the Steering Committee on Problem Solving Courts for the Florida Supreme Court and the Mental Health Committee for Florida s Eleventh Judicial Circuit. His activism has yielded significant reductions in arrests and recidivism among people with mental illnesses, having brought nationwide attention to the issue as Special Advisor on Criminal Justice and Mental Health for the Florida Supreme Court and Chair of its Task Force on Substance Abuse and Mental Health Issues. Using Mental Health Research to Achieve Health Equity Featured Speaker Altha Stewart, M.D. Dr. Altha Stewart is an Associate Professor/Chief of Social and Community Psychiatry and the Director of the Center for Health in Justice-Involved Youth at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis. She currently serves as President of the American Psychiatric Association. She spent a large part of her career serving as a CEO/ Executive Director of large public mental health systems in Pennsylvania, New York, and Michigan where she oversaw the management and development of programs for persons with mental illness and substance use disorders. Symposium Moderator Robert M.A. Hirschfeld, M.D. BBRF Founding Scientific Council Member 2002 Distinguished Investigator 2003 Falcone Prizewinner for Outstanding Achievement in Mood Disorders Research Dr. Robert Hirschfeld is a Professor of Psychiatry and the DeWitt Wallace Senior Scholar in the Department of Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College. He specializes in the treatment of bipolar disorder and depression in adults, particularly in patients whose illness has not responded to treatment. He is known internationally for his research on the diagnosis and treatment of depression, bipolar disorder, and anxiety disorders. He has made major contributions to our understanding of the classification of depression and bipolar disorders, their clinical course, relationship to personality and personality disorders, and treatment with medication and psychotherapy. Symposium Commentator Ned H. Kalin, M.D. BBRF Scientific Council Member Dr. Ned Kalin is Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he is Director of the HealthEmotions Research Institute and Lane Neuroimaging Laboratory. He has made significant advances in uncovering basic brain and molecular mechanisms that cause children to be vulnerable to develop anxiety and depressive disorders. In addition to his research activities, he treats patients who suffer from anxiety and depression including refractory to standard treatment. He will become editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Psychiatry on January 1, 2019.
