Utilising edna technology for detection of Aedes aegypti DNA in water Nadia Bannerman Environmental Health Officer Gympie Regional Council EHA (QLD) Inc 77th Annual State Conference Tuesday, 4 September 2018

Environmental DNA (edna) Just like Every contact leaves a trace principle every living creature leaves traces of their DNA in their surrounding environment through skin cells, hairs and bodily secretions, this is called environmental DNA or edna.

Environmental DNA (edna) Pros Cryptic life stages Problematic morphological identification No prior assessment Any life-form DNA persistence < 3 months Cons X Dead or alive X Stages of development X Density Initial step in surveillance.

EnviroDNA laboratory EnviroDNA laboratory is based in Melbourne. Dr Andrew Weeks (University of Melbourne) is leading mosquito research. Database of genetic assays including Aedes aegypti, Aedes albopictus and Aedes notoscriptus; $ (excl GST) per test (per species); Worked with WA Health and Federal Department of Agriculture and Water Resources at Perth and Melbourne airports in Gympie Regional Council is the first Council to trial edna as a surveillance tool.

Goomeri Approved systematic inspection program of rainwater tanks (s134, Local Government Act 2009) April, May and June 2018 First detected in 1998 House-to-house 2004, 2010, 2014 Pot plant saucers Bird baths Buckets Ice cream containers Animal water dishes Rapid Surveillance Vector Program (RSVP) 2016
